Seeds Hold on Day 1 of SCIAC Women's Water Polo Championships

La Verne, Ca - The 2017 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's water polo championships host by La Verne University saw all high seeds win their contests on day one. 

The morning started with No. 8 Occidental and No. 9 Caltech in the play-in game and the Tigers jumped to an early 9-1 lead after the first quarter.  Carly Zucher and Kyla Houck each had four goals for Occidental en route to an 18-4 win.  Brittany Percin had two goals for Caltech. 

Game two matched up the No. 2 seeded Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens against the No. 7 seeded Redlands Bulldogs.  Pomona-Pitzer built a 5-1 lead after the first quarter before Redlands cut it to 8-4 at the half. The Sagehens would play staunch defense the rest of the game only surrendering two goals while scoring ten for an 18-6 final score. Nohea Kahaulelio and Christina Williamson each chipped in with three goals for the Sagehens while Williamson also added an assist. Sami Walker led the Bulldogs with three goals. 

The host, No. 3 La Verne squared off against No. 6 Chapman and came away with a 14-11 win to advance to the semifinals tomorrow. Stephanie Rosero from La Verne led all scorers with five goals and chipped in an assist. The Leopards also saw Megan Little and Guarina Garcia each score three goals with Garcia also having a game high three assists.  Grace Shade contributed four goals for Chapman. 

No. 4 Cal Lutheran and No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps went the distance and was decided in overtime with the Regals getting the 9-8 win. Kristi McGee had a game high six goals including one in overtime for Cal Lutheran. Bailey Meyer made 12 saves for the Regals. Claire Baxter led the way for the Athenas with four goals while Jessica Gaffney put one goal in with thirty seconds left in regulation to force the overtime. 

The last day of the game feature the top seeded Whittier against Occidental. The defending 2016 SCIAC Champion Poets came away with a 15-7 win. Hannah Rodriquez scored four goals for Whittier while Marina Daroca Bazan had three goals and three assists.  Zucher again led the Tigers with three goals. 

Day two starts tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. with Redlands taking on Caltech. Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne play in the first semifinal at 10:45a followed by Whittier and Cal Lutheran at 12:30p. Occidental and CMS play at 2:15 while Chapman and the winner of Redlands/Caltech face off at 4:00p.
