The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) women's volleyball team was voted to finish first in the 2019 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Preseason Poll as voted upon by the league's member head coaches.
The two-time defending SCIAC Postseason Tournament champion CMS women's volleyball team secured 81 points through all nine first place votes in the 2019 preseason poll en route to being picked to finish first in the SCIAC this season. The Athenas logged a 15-1 mark in conference play in 2018 and secured a 3-1 win over fourth-seeded La Verne, and a 3-0 win over second-seeded California Lutheran in last year's SCIAC tournament. CMS then earned a 3-0 sweep over Augsburg in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Championship, before falling, 3-1 to Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Athenas begin the 2019 season on Friday, August 30 when it hosts Carroll (Wis.) in the Pacific Coast Classic.
After notching an 11-5 record in SCIAC play in 2018, Cal Lutheran finished second in the standings and was picked second in the 2019 preseason poll with 69 points. The Regals won seven of their final nine matches of the 2018 campaign and earned the second seed in the conference tournament before downing third-seeded Chapman, 3-1 in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament semifinals. Cal Lutheran then fell, 3-0 to CMS in the tournament championship match. Earning an at-large bid to the NCAA postseason, the Regals fell to Illinois Wesleyan, 3-0 in the first round of the national playoffs. Cal Lutheran begins play on Friday, August 30 against Augsburg at the Pacific Coast Classic.
Picked in the third spot ahead of the 2019 season, Chapman posted a 10-6 SCIAC ledger in 2018 and finished third in the standings, and fell to Cal Lutheran, 3-1 in the league tournament semifinas. Chapman, which received 64 points in the preseason vote, will begin the new season at the Pacific Coast Classic when it squares off against Carroll (Wis.) on Friday, August 30.
With 43 points in the 2019 preseason poll, Pomona-Pitzer was picked to finish fourth. The Sagehens were one of three teams to finish the 2018 SCIAC season at 10-6 and narrowly missed the postseason tournament due to tiebreakers. Pomona-Pitzer begins the new campaign on Friday, August 30 against Dallas at the Pacific Coast Classic.
Whittier and La Verne each logged 42 points in the preseason poll voting heading into the 2019 season. The Poets tabbed a 9-7 overall record in 2018, while the Leopards entered the 2018 SCIAC Postseason Tournament with a 10-6 record and fell to CMS, 3-0 in the tournament semifinals. Whittier will take on Whitworth at the Southwestern University Volleyball Invitational on Friday, August 30 to kickoff its 2019 slate, while La Verne will play Augsburg at the Pacific Coast Classic on Friday, August 30.
After placing seventh in the standings a year ago, Redlands was voted to finish in that spot in 2019 after notching 35 points in the preseason voting. The Bulldogs logged four wins against league opposition last season, and will begin the current year on Friday, August 30 against Wisconsin-Platteville at the Pacific Coast Classic.
Occidental and Caltech round out the 2019 preseason poll with 17 and 11 points respectively after finishing eighth and ninth in the standings a year ago. The Tigers will begin their 2019 season against Kean at the Pacific Coast Classic on Friday, August 30, while the Beavers will host Life Pacific on Friday, August 30.
