2018 SCIAC Women's Volleyball Athletes of the Week

Offensive Athlete of the Week - September 3, 2018
Annie Leonard AMANDA ROBERTS
California Lutheran | Senior | Outside Hitter | Grass Valley, Calif.


Amanda Roberts paced California Lutheran to an impressive, 4-0 weekend that featured a 3-1 wins over No. 6 Johnson & Wales and No. 14 Carthage, a sweep of St. Scholastica, and 3-1 triumph over Salisbury. Roberts led the Regals with 43 kills during the week, averaging 3.07 per set, in addition to notching 38 digs (2.71 per frame). Against Carthage, Roberts smashed 17 kills and registered 14 digs, while adding 15 kills and 11 digs in the win over Johnson & Wales.

Specialist of the Week - September 3, 2018
PHOEBE MADSEN
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps | Junior | Setter | Santa Barbara, Calif.


Phoebe Madsen led top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) to a 3-1 week which featured 3-2 wins over No. 14 Carthage and Brandeis, a 3-0 win over No. 9 Southwestern (Texas), and a hard-fought, 3-2 loss to No. 6 Johnson & Wales. Madsen directed the Athenas’ attack with 131 total assists, including 39 against the Wildcats, averaging 7.28 helpers per frame. She added 30 kills and 55 digs including 21 against the Judges en route to 3.06 digs per set. She also served up nine aces and recorded eight total blocks.

Offensive Athlete of the Week - September 10, 2018

SOPHIE SRIVASTAVA
Chapman | First-Year | Setter/Hitter | Belmont, Calif.


Chapman first-year Sophie Srivastava helped Chapman to a 5-0 week that featured 3-0 sweeps of Southwestern (Texas), Willamette, and Whitman. The Panthers also notched 3-1 wins over UC Santa Cru and Puget Sound. Srivastava was terrific on offense, flooring 62 kills on 146 swings en route to a .295 hitting percentage and averaging 3.65 kills per set. She also dished out 83 assists (4.88 per frame) and totaled 50 digs (2.94 per set).

Specialist of the Week - September 10, 2018

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps | Junior | Libero | Los Altos, Calif.


Claremont-Mudd-Scripps junior libero Sarah Tritschler helped lift the Athenas to a 4-0 week that included victories over Texas-Dallas (3-1), Trinity (Texas) (3-2), Texas-Tyler (3-2) and Texas Lutheran, 3-1. The junior from Los Altos, Calif. amassed 90 digs over the four matches, averaging 5.00 digs per set, including 27 in the win over Texas-Tyler, and 25 each in the wins over Trinity and Texas Lutheran.

Offensive Athlete of the Week - September 17, 2018

Whittier | Senior | Outside Hitter | Corona, Calif.


Makenzie Thieme helped Whittier pick up its first two wins of SCIAC play in 2018 and improve to 5-5 overall. Thieme registered 25 total kills, averaging 4.17 per set, added three service aces, and logged 23 digs (3.83 per frame). In a 3-1 victory over Occidental, Thieme smashed 17 kills (4.25 per set) and added 16 digs, while she added eight kills and three service aces in a 3-0 sweep of Caltech.

Specialist of the Week - September 17, 2018

Pomona-Pitzer | First-Year | Setter | Fremont, Calif.


First-year Pomona-Pitzer setter Adrienne Tong lifted the Sagehens to a 3-2 thriller over Redlands in the team’s SCIAC opener. Tong, playing in her first conference contest of her collegiate career, dished out 50 assists (10.00 per set) and collected 14 digs (2.80 per frame) to help Pomona-Pitzer to the five-set victory. The Fremont, Calif. native also added two kills and an assisted block in the winning effort.

Offensive Athlete of the Week - September 24, 2018

Pomona-Pitzer | Senior | Outside Hitter | Monterey Park, Calif.


Julia Zwaal helped Pomona-Pitzer to a 3-0 week in SCIAC play as the Sagehens defeated Caltech (3-0), Occidental (3-1), and Whittier (3-2). Zwaal finished with 39 kills, averaging 3.25 kills per set. She added 43 digs over the three-match span and averaged 3.58 digs per frame. In Pomona-Pitzer’s five-setter with Whittier, Zwaal totaled 19 kills, while she chipped in 19 digs against the Tigers.

Specialist of the Week - September 24, 2018
MADISON MAYNES
La Verne | Junior | Setter | Rialto, Calif.


La Verne junior setter Madison Maynes helped the Leopards to a 2-1 week in conference action. La Verne fell, 3-2 to CMS, and defeated Redlands, 3-1 and Caltech, 3-0. Maynes finished the week with an impressive 125 total assists, averaging 10.42 helpers per set. The Rialto, Calif. native also notched 42 digs, notching 3.50 per frame. In the 3-2 loss to the Athenas, Maynes dished out 46 assists and logged 21 digs to highlight the week.

JESSI LUMSDEN
Chapman | First-Year | Outside Hitter | Carlsbad, Calif.


Jessi Lumsden helped pace Chapman to a 3-0 week in SCIAC play as the Panthers picked up a trio of crucial 3-1 victories over Pomona-Pitzer, Cal Lutheran and La Verne. Lumsden registered a double-double in each contest tallying 50 total kills (4.17 per set), 32 total digs (2.67 per frame) and added an assist, a service ace and a block. The Carlsbad, Calif. native added 18 kills against the Sagehens, and 16 kills each against the Regals and Leopards.

Chapman first-year setter Sophie Srivastava guided the Panthers to three key conference wins with a triple-double effort in each match. The Belmont, Calif. native handed out 28 assists, registered 11 kills and notched 10 digs against Pomona-Pitzer; dished out 29 assists, logged 13 digs and smashed 11 kills against Cal Lutheran; and totaled 23 assists, 10 digs and 12 kills against La Verne. For the week, she averaged 2.83 kills per set, 6.67 assists per frame, and 2.75 digs per set. In addition she had eight total blocks and five aces.

Makenzie Thieme of Whittier earned her second SCIAC weekly accolade after pacing the Poets to a 5-0 week that featured a 3-2 conference win over Redlands, 3-0 victories over DeSales, UC Santa Cruz, and UMass-Boston, and a 3-1 win over Nazareth. Thieme smashed 67 kills, averaging 3.72 kills per set, and added 24 digs during the week, capped by a double-double effort of 14 kills and 11 digs in the win over Nazareth.

MADISON MAYNES
La Verne | Junior | Setter | Rialto, Calif.


La Verne junior setter Madison Maynes secured her second SCIAC weekly award as the Leopards posted a 5-0 week. The Leopards dispatched PomonaPitzer, 3-0 in SCIAC play, while topping DeSales (3-1), UC Santa Cruz (3-0), UMass-Boston (3-0) and Nazareth (3-0). Maynes dished out 153 assists during the stretch, averaging 9.56 assists per set. She also totaled 55 digs, averaging 3.44 per frame.

Amanda Roberts helped California Lutheran to a 3-0 week in SCIAC play that featured a 3-0 win over La Verne, a 3-1 victory over Redlands, and a 3-2 triumph over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS). Roberts finished with 42 kills on the week, averaging 3.50 kills per frame in addition to notching 44 digs (3.67 per set). She also totaled six blocks, an assist, and a service ace.

Specialist of the Week - October 15, 2018

SARA UTSUGI
Chapman | Senior | Defensive Specialist | Aiea, Hawai’i


Chapman defensive specialist Sara Utsugi helped the Panthers to a 2-1 week that saw them post a 3-0 win over Caltech and a 3-1 win over Occidental, as well as a 3-1 loss to Redlands. Utsugi totaled 53 digs, averaging 4.82 per frame including 20 in the loss to the Bulldogs. She also contributed six assists and a service ace during the three-match stretch.
