The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) duo of Catherine Allen and Caroline Cox won the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Doubles Championship Sunday afternoon at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich.
In the doubles semifinals, Allen and Cox of CMS fell behind, 6-4 to Middlebury's Katherine Hughes and Skylar Schossberger in the first set. Allen and Cox battled to a 7-6 win in frame two, before pulling away to a 6-1 victory in the third set to give the Athenas one doubles team in the championship match.
The other semifinal matchup featured another CMS vs. Middlebury contest as the Athena duo of Sarah Bahsoun and Nicole Tan took on the Panthers' Heather Boehm and Ann Martin Skelly. Boehm and Skelly got off to a fast start, winning the opening frame, 6-4 before CMS answered with a 6-1 victory in the second set. Bahsoun and Tan then made it an all Athenas final with a 6-4 win in the decisive third stanza.
In the championship contest, Bahsoun and Tan edged their CMS teammates, 7-6 before Allen and Cox rallied for a 6-1 victory in set two. In the decisive third frame, Allen and Cox clinched their doubles championship with a 6-3 win.
