The defending national champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) women's tennis team will have a chance to defend its title on Wednesday, May 22 in the NCAA Division III Championship final against Wesleyan (Conn.) at 11:10 a.m. PDT at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich.
CMS (27-1) defeated Middlebury (19-3), 5-2 in the NCAA Semifinals on Tuesday. Wesleyan (19-2) edged Emory, 5-4 in the other semifinal to set up the showdown between the Athenas and the Cardinals.
In doubles action, Catherine Allen and Caroline Cox pushed past Heather Boehm and Ann Martin Skelly, 8-5 on the No. 1 court, while Sarah Bahsoun and Nicole Tan narrowly defeated Katherine Hughes and Skylar Schossberger, 8-7 (7-5) in No. 2 doubles to give CMS a 2-0 lead. The Panthers' Christina Puccinelli and Maddi Stow outlasted Sydney Lee and Madison Shea, 8-7 (11-9) to make it 2-1 heading to singles play.
In No. 1 singles, Allen made it 3-1 as she took down Boehm, 6-1, 6-0. Hughes won, 6-0, 6-2 against Tan on the No. 2 court to make it 3-2, but Lee and Cox were able to win on courts 4 and 5 as Lee downed Schossberger, 6-3, 6-2, while Cox bested Stow, 6-3, 6-1 respectively to help the Athenas earn a return trip to the national title match.
