In a battle of Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) powerhouses, No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) defeated No. 5 Pomona-Pitzer, 5-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship regional Sunday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif.
With the win, CMS improves to 25-1 overall and will take on Carnegie Mellon in Kalamazoo, Mich. next Monday, May 20 in the NCAA Quarterfinals. Pomona-Pitzer concludes its season, 16-6 overall.
Sarah Bahsoun and Nicole Tan earned an 8-2 win on the No. 2 doubles court to give CMS the first point of the contest. Sydney Lee and Madison Shea secured an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles, while Pomona-Pitzer managed its lone point of the match at No. 1 doubles. The combination of Maria Lyven and Arianna Chen defeated the Athenas' duo of Catherine Allen and Caroline Cox, 8-5.
In singles action, Bahsoun won at No. 6 with a 6-2, 6-2 triumph, while Cox followed at No. 5 with a 6-2, 6-3 win. Rebecca Berger (No. 3) and Lee (No. 4) both had simultaneous match points with a chance to provide the clincher. After Berger (who led 6-2, 5-2) went to deuce on her court, Lee ended the match by breaking serve at love for a 6-2, 6-0 win and the decisive fifth point in the 5-1 win.
