Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) was selected to finish first in the 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Women's Tennis Preseason Poll following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches.
CMS received six of eight first place votes and 62 points after the Athenas posted an impressive 29-1 overall record, 10-0 mark in SCIAC action and an appearance in the NCAA Division III Semifinals in 2017. CMS earned its seventh straight SCIAC crown following a 5-4 win over Pomona-Pitzer, clinching the program's 19th overall SCIAC championship.
The Sagehens received two first place nods and 58 total points in the 2018 preseason voting after posting a 16-8 overall ledger, highlighted by an 8-2 record in the SCIAC in 2017. Pomona-Pitzer captured an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship after falling to CMS in the SCIAC Tournament final and earned a 5-2 win over Trinity (Texas) in the NCAA Regionals. From there, the Sagehens fell to the Athenas, 5-3 in the NCAA Third Round.
Redlands grabbed third place in the voting with 46 points after notching a 7-3 record against SCIAC foes en route to a 10-11 overall mark. The Bulldogs defeated Caltech, 5-1 in last year's SCIAC Tournament third place match. The Beavers, who finished fourth in the standings a year ago, were tabbed to finish fourth again after staking 39 points in the voting ahead of the 2018 season. Caltech secured a 10-9 record and a 5-5 mark in SCIAC play last year.
Cal Lutheran (32 points) and Chapman (23 points) finished fifth and sixth in the preseason voting as the Regals (7-11, 5-5 SCIAC) and Panthers (2-17, 1-9 SCIAC) will both look to improve from a year ago. Occidental (17 points) and Whittier (11 points) rounded out the voting and will also look to build on their 2017 campaigns.
Entering the 2018 season, CMS is ranked third in the Oracle ITA Division III Top 40; Pomona-Pitzer is ranked sixth; Redlands is ranked 35th; and Caltech is tied for 40th.
