Claremont, CA - Over the weekend Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer competed in the women's tennis NCAA regional hosted by CMS. Each team received a first round bye as the Athenas took on East Texas Baptist University in the second round while the Sagehens squared off against Trinity (Tx).
The Athenas jumped on the board quickly sweeping the doubles to go up 3-0 heading into singles. Catherine Allen and Katie Kousman secured the two singles points needed for the 5-0 win.
The Sagehens took a 2-1 lead after doubles against Trinity behind wins from Caroline Casper and Arianna Chen and Grace Hruska and Joy Kim. The Sagehens would get two points from the No. 3 and No. 4 singles positions as Mae Coyiuto battled through a tough first set to win 7-6, 6-1 at No. 3 while Chen cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4. Trinity would push Pomona-Pitzer to the limit as No.1, No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 singles would all go three sets. Trinity would win at No. 5 to cut the lead to 4-2 overall. Needing only one of the three matches still playing Maryann Zhao sealed the win at No. 2 singles 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
An unfortunate draw would set up the third meeting between the No. 5 Sagehens and No. 1 Athenas on Sunday afternoon for a spot in the Elite 8. Pomona-Pitzer came out of the gates quickly taking two of the three doubles as Casper and Chen and Hruska and Kim won. Casper would also win at No. 1 singles for the Sagehens but the Athenas would roll off singles wins by Nicole Tan, Allen, Jessie Cruz and Lindsay Brown for the 5-3 win.
The team championships now move to Chattanooga, TN as the Chattanooga Sports Commission will host the championship finals, which will be held May 22-27 at The Champions Tennis Club in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
CMS will face the Washington (Mo) on Monday, May 22 for a spot in the final four. The Athenas defeated the Bears 7-2 on February 25
