Redlands, CA - The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's tennis championships was completed Saturday evening after a rain-delayed full day with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps defeating Pomona-Pitzer in an epic 5-4 battle between two national powerhouses.
Pomona-Pitzer would take a 2-1 lead after doubles as Lindsay Brown and Nicole Tan grabbed the lone point for the Athenas in doubles winning 8-2 at the top spot over Maryann Zhao and Emily Chen. Caroline Casper and Arianna Chen from Pomona-Pitzer took No. 2 doubles 8-4 over Katie Kousman and Catherine Allen. Grace Hruska and Joy Kim would give the Sagehens their second point with a win at third doubles 8-6 over Kyla Scott and Madison Shea.
Brown tied up the team score for the Athenas with a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over Kim. Allen gave the Athenas their first lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles over Arianna Chen. Pomona-Pitzer would tie the score as Casper defeated Scott 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Tan battled for a three set win over Zhao, 6-2, 2-6, 6-0. Mae Coyiuto would even the team score at 4-4 with a three set win over Jessie Cruz from CMS. Kousman would get the final point to give the Athenas the win with a close 7-5, 6-3 victory over Emily Chen.
Redlands defeated Caltech 5-1 in the third place match behind a sweep in the doubles. Sarah Ikioka at No. 1 singles and Madison Ross at No. 6 singles clinched the match for the Bulldogs with wins.
