Chattanooga, Tenn - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's tennis team defeated Washington University (MO) 5-1 on Monday afternoon to advance to the NCAA final four.
The Athenas took a 2-1 lead after doubles. Catherine Allen and Katie Kousman won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles while Kyla Scott and Jessie Cruz won at No. 3 doubles 8-6. Lindsay Brown and Nicole Tan fell at No. 1 doubles 8-4 to the top team from the central region which was their first Division III loss of the spring.
Brown made quick work of her singles match with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles to give the Athenas the 3-1 lead. Kousman would quickly follow winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles to put CMS within a point of advancing to the final four. Tan avenged her doubles loss with a swift 6-1 and 6-2 win over Grace Deering to seal the match.
No. 1 CMS will face No. 3 Emory University tomorrow at 10 a.m. EST in the semifinals. The Eagles won against Bowdoin 5-1 in their quarterfinal match and went 16-6 during the regular season.
