SCIAC Women's Soccer All-Conference Honors Announced

The 2018 All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Women's Soccer teams were announced Tuesday following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches.

Pomona-Pitzer's senior defender Sarah Jones was voted the 2018 SCIAC Athlete of the Year after helping pace the Sagehens to a 9-3-2 record in league play and the top seed in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament. During the 14-game conference slate, Jones anchored a Pomona-Pitzer backline that allowed just five goals which includes a penalty kick and an own goal. As a center back, she was able to help read the game, organize the defense, and breakup plays with crucial tackles. She also contributed a game-winning goal against Caltech, and was a goal-scoring threat on set pieces throughout the season. Also named First Team All-SCIAC, Jones was a second team all-conference selection last year.

SCIAC Newcomer of the Year honors went to Occidental first-year defender Isabella Bonomi. The Palo Alto, Calif. native helped the Tigers to an 8-2-4 record in SCIAC play during the 2018 regular season, and led a backline that surrendered just four goals in league action. A left back that has the ability to venture forward, Bonomi added four goals and three assists throughout the season, including a game-winner against Caltech.

Peri Cuppens of Pomona-Pitzer was voted the 2018 recipient of the Award of Distinction. Cuppens showed great resiliency in overcoming an ACL injury that occurred in her junior season. An all-conference second team player as a sophomore, she has returned to form and is actually a better all-around player then she was before. The Lincoln, Neb. native has matured into a tremendous leader on and off the field for the Sagehens, and has been the ultimate team captain. Her  extracurriculars include two study abroad programs (Spain and Costa Rica), playing the cello in the college orchestra, working for the Office of Residential Life and various internships and research opportunities. She has a 3.6 GPA and will graduate in December from Pitzer College with an Organizational Studies major and a minor in Spanish.

Occidental head coach Colm McFeely and the coaching staff earned SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors after directing the Tigers to a 9-2-4 overall record and an 8-2-4 mark in conference play. Occidental, which has allowed just five goals in 2018 (four in SCIAC play) earned the third seed in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament. This is McFeely's first SCIAC postseason honor in eight years at the helm of the women's soccer program.
