The 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) women's soccer postseason tournament is set to begin on Wednesday, October 31 on the campus of the first and second seeds.
Pomona-Pitzer (12-3-2 overall) earned the top seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament after registering a 9-3-2 record and 29 points in league play during the 2018 regular season. The Sagehens will host fourth-seeded Redlands (9-6-2 overall) in the tournament semifinals after the Bulldogs finished with 26 points and an 8-4-2 mark in SCIAC action. The game is set for 2:30 p.m. in Claremont, Calif.
Wednesday's other seminfinal contest features second-seeded California Lutheran (10-2-5, overall) and third-seed Occidental (9-2-4 overall). Both teams logged conference records of 8-2-4 during the regular season with the Regals earning the higher seed on a tiebreaker. The game is set to kickoff at 7 p.m. in Thousand Oaks, Calif.
Pomona-Pitzer and Redlands met once during the regular season with the Sagehens posting a 2-0 victory on September 26, while Cal Lutheran and the Tigers squared off twice during the season slate. Both games ended in 0-0 double overtime draws on September 5 and October 6.
The winners of the semifinal matchups will the square off in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament final Saturday, November 3 on the campus of the highest remaining seed.
The Tournament Field at a Glance
Pomona-Pitzer takes the field having won two straight games and four of its last six matches. The Sagehens are led by Bria VarnBuhler who has netted nine goals this season, including three game-winners, while Anna Ponzio has registered seven goals and a pair of assists with a trio of game-winners. In goal, Isa Berardo has posted a 12-3-2 overall record and allowed just three goals for a sensational 0.21 goals-against average. They have also made 42 saves and posted a .933 save percentage thus far in 2018.
Since the calendar turned to October, Cal Lutheran has not lost, posting a 6-0-2 record en route to securing the second seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament. The Regals' balanced attack is led by Sam Cornejo who leads the team with 10 points on four goals and two assists, while Trinity Martinez has contributed nine points from her defensive position on three goals and three assists. Gabby Flores allowed just two goals during the regular season, posted a 0.18 goals-against average, collected 45 saves and logged a .957 save percentage.
Third-seeded Occidental is riding a two-match win streak and has won four of its last seven contests enter postseason play. Isabella Bonomi leads the Tigers with 12 points on the strength of four goals and four assists, while Elleni Bekele and Katherine Kim have amassed 10 points each on five goals, and four goals and two assists respectively. Sydney Tomlinson has made 66 saves, registered a 0.32 goals-against average, and a .930 save percentage during the 2018 season.
Redlands garnered the fourth seed in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament and is looking to snap a two-match losing streak. The Bulldogs, who are 3-3-1 in their last seven outings, are led by Eva Vlassopoulos who has notched 16 points (6 goals, 3 assists). Hayley Romo and Adi Fellows follow with three goals each, while Romo has posted three assists for nine points. Fellows has added one helper for seven points. Brittany Dinkins has played the majority of the minutes in goal for Redlands and has logged a 1.13 goals-against average with 44 saves, and a .786 save percentage.
