SCIAC Women's Soccer All-Conference Honors Announced

The 2017 All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Women's Soccer teams were announced Wednesday following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches.

Senior forward Kali Youngdahl of Cal Lutheran was named the 2017 SCIAC Athlete of the Year after helping the Regals to the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament thanks to a 11-1-2 record against league competition during the regular season.

Youngdahl earned her fourth consecutive First Team All-SCIAC honor in 2017 after pacing Cal Lutheran with eight goals and three assists for a total of 18 points in 14 conference contests. During the course of the SCIAC season, the Renton, Wash. native netted five game-winning goals, highlighted by a brace in the Regals' 2-1 victory over Pomona-Pitzer on Oct. 25. She also sealed games against Chapman (Sept. 16), the Sagehens earlier in the season on Sept. 30, Occidental (Oct. 18), and Whittier to close out the regular season on Oct. 28. Youngdahl finished the regular season campaign as the league leader in points and goals.

Teammate Trinity Martinez was named the 2017 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year following a terrific debut season. An outside back, Martinez helped Cal Lutheran secure six clean sheets against SCIAC opponents. In addition, the defender from Northridge, Calif. notched two goals, and tied for the conference lead in assists with four. A key component of an impressive backline, Martinez and the defense allowed a SCIAC low eight goals, and registered a .59 goals-against average.

Jacey Coniff of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) was named the 2017 SCIAC Award of Distinction recipient. The Award of Distinction recognizes a senior female SCIAC soccer athlete for exemplary achievements through their higher education experience. Specifically it recognizes students who, while competing on their teams, have been recognized by coaches, officials, institutional administrators or others as making significant contributions representing their school and serving their communities based on the following criteria: advancing sportsmanship, balancing sports and major personal academic achievements, demonstrating behavior that models efforts of inclusion within their teams and those of their opponents, contributes to a sense of civility in society or otherwise innovatively elevates the profile of what participation in the SCIAC conference and as a Division III student-athlete can offer to the betterment of the community.

Coniff, who hails from Thornton, Colo., maintains higher than a 3.9 grade point average (GPA), works as a tutor for both peers and local students through the Harvey Mudd hotline, and works with professors doing research. This past summer, she worked as a rocket scientist.

The 2017 SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors went to Frank Marino of Cal Lutheran. Now in his ninth season at the helm, Marino guided the Regals to a 15-2-2 overall record, highlighted by a 11-1-2 mark in SCIAC action. His team has kept eight clean sheets, highlighted by five against conference competition. This is Marino's first SCIAC postseason honor.
