The field for the 2019 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Women's Basketball Postseason Tournament is set. Tournament play will begin Thursday, February 21 with the semifinals, with the final on Saturday, February 23.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) captured the top seed in the conference tournament for the fifth straight season, and will be in search of its fifth league tournament crown since 2008. The Athenas highlighted a 23-2 overall record during the 2018-19 regular season with a 15-1 mark in SCIAC play. CMS's lone defeat came to defending tournament champion Chapman, 64-55 on Dec. 1. Since then, the Athenas have won 19 straight heading into the postseason. They will host fourth-seeded Redlands at 7 p.m. on Thursday in semifinal action. The Bulldogs (11-14, 8-8 SCIAC) are making their 12th consecutive appearance in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament and will be looking for their second title, and first since 2010. CMS outlasted Redlands, 69-65 in last year's semifinals, and won both of this year's regular season contests (47-41 and 53-41).
Thursday's other semifinal features second-seed Pomona-Pitzer (20-5, 14-2 SCIAC) against third-seeded Chapman (16-9, 11-5 SCIAC). The Sagehens' only conference losses came against the Athenas, 85-74 on Dec. 5, and 78-55 on January 24. Pomona-Pitzer - winners of six straight entering the SCIAC Tournament - is making its first-ever league tournament appearance and will host the defending tournament champion Panthers at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Chapman won three straight to close out the regular season, and will be in search of their second SCIAC Postseason Tournament crown. This is the sixth straight tournament berth for the Panthers. Pomona-Pitzer won both regular season meetings (76-61 and 90-83).
The winners of the two semifinal games will square off on Saturday, February 23 for the SCIAC Postseason Tournament title at the highest remaining seed, and at a time to be determined.
