11 men and 11 women have been invited to compete at the 2017 NCAA DIII Swimming & Diving National Championships over a four-day period, March 15-18, at the CISD Natatorium in Shenandoah, Texas.
On the men’s side freshman Tom Gallup will represent Caltech as their first swimmer to make nationals since 1983. Gallup will complete in the 100-and 200-yard Breaststroke as he claimed the SCIAC title in both. Cal Lutheran will also have a freshman making his NCAA debut as Benjamin Brewer qualified in both the 1650 free and 500 free. Brewer is the first Kingsmen to qualify for nationals as he set a SCIAC meet record in the 1650 free clocking in at 15:28.26.
Pomona-Pitzer saw both its 200 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay teams qualify as Ryan Drover, Mark Hallman, Adrian Hu and Samuel To make up the 200 free team and George Abele, Hallman, Zack Senator and To the 800 free team.
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps is sending four Stags including senior Matt Williams the defending national champion in the 100-yard backstroke. Williams qualified in the 100 fly, 100 back,200 back and as part of the 800-freestyle relay. Fellow senior Graham Spurzem will join Williams as part of the 800-free relay team. Sophomore Jackson Crewe will be making his NCAA debut as a member of the 800-free relay team along with freshman Ben Culberson who also qualified in the 500 free and 1650 free.
On the women’s side Cal Lutheran’s Mardell Ramirez qualified for the 200 free after posting a time of 1:51.10 at SCIACs. Senior Ellie Jaques returns to NCAAs for the second straight year and will represent Redlands after claiming both the 200 IM and 400 IM titles at the SCIAC Championships. She will look to improve upon her 16th place finish in both the 200 IM and 400 IM from a year ago.
Five Athenas will represent CMS as freshman Claire Bacon-Brenes qualified in the 200-medley relay, 400 medley, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke. Junior Elizabeth Carrade will swim the 1650 freestyle. Seniors Kelly Ngo and Stephanie Doi both will swim legs of the 200 and 400 medley team. Freshman Jocelyn Crawford qualified for the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke as well as the 200 and 400 medley relay.
The Pomona-Pitzer 200 medley relay team of Erin Bigus, Sarah Jin, Madison Kauahi and Angela Ling will represent the Sagehens. Jin and Ling will also swim the 100 back while Kauahi qualified for the 50 and 100 free.
