NCAA Softball Championship Day 2 Recap

NCAA Softball Championship Day 2 Recap

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) softball team fell to Linfield, 5-2, and Whittier fell to the Wildcats, 8-4 in regional action at Athena Field on the campus of CMS Saturday afternoon. Both teams are eliminated from competition following Saturday's results.

With the loss, CMS concludes its season 31-13 overall, while Whittier concludes its campaign, 24-20-1 on the season.

Linfield def. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), 5-2
CMS etched the game's first run when Maddie Valdez powered a home run to left field in the top of the first frame to give the Athenas an early 1-0 lead.

Linfield answered with three runs in the bottom of the third, before CMS got one back in the top of the fourth when Kawai Scanlan delivered a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2. That's as close as the Athenas could get as the Wildcats used runs in the fourth and fifth to seal the 5-2 win.

Linfield def. Whittier, 8-4
After falling behind, 3-0 over the first three innings, Whittier rallied for three in the top of the fourth as Jade Sanchez got the scoring started for the Poets with a run-scoring single through the left side. Hayley Wishner delivered an RBI sacrifice bunt up the middle, before a groundout off the bat of Janelle Ha allowed Whittier to plate the tying run. However, Linfield answered with three runs of its own in the home half of the frame to make it 6-3. A Brianna MaGee legged out an inside-the-park home run to center to cut Whittier's deficit to to 6-4, but the Wildcats scored once in the fifth and once in the sixth to seal the 8-4 victory.
