In a tight race at the top of the 2019 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Preseason Poll, Pomona-Pitzer received 52 points to finish first in the voting as voted on by member head coaches.
Pomona-Pitzer received two first place votes and three second place mentions to highlight its 52 points. The Sagehens finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 27-16 keyed by a 17-11 record in SCIAC play and the third seed in the conference postseason tournament. Pomona-Pitzer defeated Whittier, 6-5 in the opening round of play before falling to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) (2-1), and La Verne (4-1) in the double elimination playoffs.
The Saghens edged CMS in the 2019 preseason voting as the Athenas earned three first place votes and two second place votes to claim 51 points. CMS, the fourth-seed in last season's SCIAC Postseason Tournament, fnished 32-14 overall, 17-11 in league action and won the tournament title. The Atheans defeated La Verne, 2-0 and Pomona-Pitzer, 2-1, before clinching the crown with another 2-0 victory over the Leopards. In the NCAA Division III Championship, CMS defeated George Fox, 6-3 in the opening contest, before falling twice to Linfield (10-1 and 2-1) in regional action.
La Verne and Whittier each received 49 votes in the preseason poll with the Leopards receiving two first place votes, while the Poets had one first place nod. La Verne was 28-16 overall a year ago, with a 21-7 SCIAC ledger, while Whittier was 25-16-1, and boasted an 18-10 league mark. After falling to CMS, 2-0 in the first contest of the tournament, top-seeded La Verne downed Whittier (3-2) and Pomona-Pitzer (4-1) before falling once more to the Athenas, 2-0. The second-seeded Poets lost, 6-5 to the Leopards, and 3-2 to La Verne.
Chapman was voted to finish fifth in the 2019 SCIAC preseason poll with 32 points, while Redlands was tabbed to finish sixth with 28 points. The Panthers and Bulldogs each finished with overall records of 17-23, while Redlands logged a 12-16 SCIAC mark, and Chapman a 10-18 SCIAC slate. Occidental and California Lutheran finished with 14 and 13 points respectively in the preseason poll to place seventh and eighth. The Regals were also 17-23, 10-18 SCIAC a year ago, while the Tigers posted a 12-25-1 overall mark, highlighted by a 7-21 conference record.
The 2019 regular season begins Tuesday, January 29 when La Verne hosts St. Katherine in a double header.
