CMS Softball Edged by Linfield in NCAA Regional Action

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) softball team fell to Linfield, 2-1 in Saturday evening's NCAA Division III Championship Regional final.

With the loss, CMS concludes its season with an overall record of 32-14, while Linfield advances to next weekend's NCAA super regional round.

Linfield went ahead early, plating a run in the bottom of the first when Darian Stedman singled to right field scoring Cheyenne Fletcher from third with the Wildcats' first run of the game.

After three scoreless frames, CMS tied the game when Jessica Fox singled to left center to lead off the top of the fourth and came around to score a sacrifice fly to left field by Reeve Grobecker which evened the score at 1-1.

Linfield responded in the home half of the frame when Fletcher drove a home run to left center field to give the Wildcats a 2-1 edge late in the game.

The Athenas had two chances to try and level the game once more, but the Wildcats were able to retire the side in order in both the sixth and seventh stanzas, eliminating CMS from tournament action.

Chloe Amarilla pitched all six innings for the Athenas in defeat, striking out four batters while allowing two runs on seven hits with a walk.

Linfield's Shelby Saylors allowed one unearned run and scattered three hits while fanning a pair of hitters to seal the win for the Wildcats.
