SCIAC Softball All-Conference Honors Announced

The 2018 All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) softball teams were announced Wednesday following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches.

Pomona-Pitzer's Liz Rodarte was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Year and a First Team All-SCIAC selection. Rodarte was a first team all-conference honoree both as a first-year and a sophomore, and was also voted the SCIAC Co-Newcomer of the Year in 2016. During the 2018 conference slate, Rodarte was tremendous at the plate, hitting .382 on with 34 hits, four doubles, seven home runs and 26 RBI in addition to scoring 18 runs. She was equally impressive in the circle for the Sagehens logging 105.2 innings pitched and 10 complete games, and a 10-5 record with two saves. She fanned 83 batters and registered a 2.98 ERA against league competition.

Anna Gurr of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) earned SCIAC Pitcher of the Year honors for the third straight season. Gurr, who is also named First Team All-SCIAC for the third time in her collegiate career, was a second team all-league winner as a first-year in 2015. Amassing 101.1 innings of work during the 2018 conference season, Gurr posted a 9-6 record and added two saves in addition to tossing 10 complete games. Gurr struck out 62 batters in 21 appearances and finished the SCIAC slate with a 1.87 ERA.

La Verne's Jiana Rojo was voted the SCIAC Newcomer of the Year after helping the Leopards seal the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament. Rojo tossed eight complete games in 18 appearances in league play this year en route to a 10-3 record which includes two saves. Rojo struck out 44 batters in 88 innings pitched, and collected a stellar 1.19 ERA.

Head coach Julie Smith of La Verne and the Leopards' coaching staff were voted the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year after clinching the top seed in the conference tournament with a 21-7 ledger in league play. Smith, who also garnered coaching staff of the year honors in 2016, guided La Verne to five series sweeps in the month of April to help the Leopards capture the number one seed for the third straight year.
