La Verne, Ca - The No. 1-seeded host University of La Verne softball team no-hit No. 3 Whittier in the final elimination game of the day to advance to the championship series vs. No. 2 CMS on Sunday beginning at noon.
Elisa Ponce (12-5) pitched the five-inning complete game no-hitter vs. the Poets in an 8-0 victory after losing game four to CMS, 10-1. Ponce struck out five and walked seven. She got a lot of offensive help from her teammates as Angelica DeAngelo hit two home runs and Michelle Deguzman also hit a long ball.With CMS’ win over La Verne, they will need just one victory over the Leopards on Sunday to earn the NCAA Automatic Berth.
The Athenas scored early and often in game four with four runs in the first, two in the second, one each in the third and fourth and two more in the seventh. They had 10 hits in the game. LA Verne’s lone run came in the first inning. Anna Gurr got her second-straight win in the tournament for CMS (16-6) pitching the complete game and allowing just five hits.
In the first elimination game of the day, No. 3 Whittier defeated No. 4 Chapman 10-8, to earn the right to play La Verne and advance in the tournament. The Panthers were up 6-0 entering the bottom of the third where the Poets scored nine runs on three singles, a double, a sacrifice fly, fielder’s choice and a groundout.
