La Verne Wins Softball Postseason Tournament with Walk-off 4-3 Win in If Necessary Game

La Verne, CA - The University of La Verne entered the championship game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps needing to win to push the tournament to the if-necessary game.

Trailing 4-1 heading into the top of the 9th, the Leopards put up four runs, including Athlete of the Year Alexis Schiff's 3-run bomb, to take the 5-4 lead. Elisa Ponce (13-5) retired the Athenas in order in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the win for La Verne. Anna Gurr tossed a complete game for the Athenas allowing eight hits and five runs. 

With their backs against the wall again the Leopards entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 3-2 when Rachel Ogata singled to left field bringing Carly Condon and Shelby Tevis home for the 4-3 walkoff win.  CMS once again turned to the SCIAC Pitcher of the Year Anna Gurr who tossed 6.1 innings allowing seven hits and four runs. 

The Leopards (31-12) will find out their regional draw tomorrow. The NCAA Division III Softball Selection Show will air at 10 a.m. PDT on NCAA.com.
