The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) has announced its 2017 softball end of the year awards, as voted upon by the league's eight head coaches. The awards include Athlete of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Newcomer and Coaching Staff of the Year, First Team and Second Team and the Sportsmanship team.
Senior Alexis Schiff from La Verne was named the SCIAC Athlete of the Year after knocking in 20 runs on the year while scoring 27 times. She had 30 hits including six doubles and six home runs in conference play this year while posting a .357 batting average, .476 obp and .642 slugging percentage. The Leopards enter the postseason tournament as the No. 1 seed after going 20-8 in the SCIAC.
Anna Gurr from CMS repeats as Pitcher of the Year after leading the conference in wins, saves, complete games, ERA and innings pitched. The junior picked up 12 wins and 5 saves on the year while posting an incredible 0.63 ERA which dropped to 0.43 in conference play. She pitched 130.1 innings of conference play while striking out 91 and only walking 14 batters.
Ande Troutman from CMS was named the Newcomer of the Year after leading the conference in batting average with .433 and was tied for 1st in OBP with .495. She was also first in hits with 36 and sixth in runs with 20. The defensive centerfielder helped the Athenas secure the No. 2 seed entering the SCIAC postseason tournament.
Alison Haehnel and her staff lead Occidental to the team's best conference finish this season picking up 11 wins, almost doubling the previous best mark of six. The Tigers picked up a win against top seeded La Verne on April 8. Occidental ended the season with a 6-2 win over tournament team Whittier as well.
