Top Three Seeds Advance, No. 5 Cal Lutheran Upsets No. 4 Whittier on Day 1 of Men's Tennis Championships

In a change of format because of the anticipated weather on Saturday and Sunday, all first round matches of the Men's SCIAC Tennis Championships were played to decision. 

No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps defeated No. 8 Occidental 5-0 behind a sweep in doubles with Daniel Morkavine and Nikolai Parodi winning 8-0, Jake Berber and Glenn Hull 8-2 and Alex Brenner and Julian Gordy 8-0. 

No. 2 Redlands handled Caltech by a score of 5-0 as the Bulldogs swept the doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles. Joey Dulle and Jake Ly defeated Sathwick Pathiredd and Morgan Lebby 8-6 in a tight contest at No. 1 doubles. The Beavers No. 2 team of Derik Nguyen and Ruthwick Pathireddy would also challenge the Bulldogs duo of Chase Lipscomb and Brad Cummins falling 9-7. Parker Wilson and Tom Suchodolski would take third doubles over Zixao Li and Connor Soohoo 8-4. 

No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer would advance to the semifinals with a 5-0 win over Chapman. Antony Bello and Spencer Simonides took No. 1 doubles 8-3 while Jake Yasgoor and Graham Maassen won No. 2 doubles by the same score. Avery Bicks and Marko Mandic would complete the sweep with a 8-5 win at third doubles. 

In the tightest match of the afternoon No.5 Cal Lutheran upset No. 4 Whittier 5-4 to advance to the semifinals. The Poets took two of three doubles but the Kingsmen rallied to win four singles to take the overall match. CLU won at No. 2 and the 4-6 singles spots as Austin Wong won 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 to seal the win for the Kingsmen. 

With the forecasted weather play will begin at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow with both the Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps serving as hosts. CMS and Cal Lutheran will square off at 9:00 a.m. at CMS while Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer will play at Pomona-Pitzer at 9:00 a.m. in the other semifinal. The backdraw matches will begin at 10:00 a.m. with one at each site. The championship match will begin at approximately noon at Pomona-Pitzer following appropriate rest after the semifinal contests.
