Chattanooga, Tenn - The individual singles and doubles competition kicked off on Thursday in Chattanooga, Tenn with multiple Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) institutions participating in both the men's and women's fields.
On the women's side the SCIAC had five singles players represented in the field including Nicole Tan and Catherine Allen from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS), Caroline Casper and Maryann Zhao form Pomona-Pitzer (PP) and Sarah Ikioka from Redlands. The No. 8 seed Tan would defeat Nithya Kanagasegar from Case Western Reserve 6-2, 6-1 before falling to Michelle Satterfield of Emory 6-4, 6-0. Freshman Ikioka drew the top seeded Eudice Chung from Wesleyan and in her NCAA debut fell 6-2, 6-0. Zhao defeated Cori Sidell from from Carnegie Mellon 6-2, 6-1 before she faced Chung in the round of 16 falling 6-3, 6-3.
Casper seeded third in the tournament faced a tough test from Ariana Iranpour of the University of Chicago defeating her in three sets, 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. The sophomore would routinely handle Ashnaa Rao from Johns Hopinks in the next round 6-1, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal matchup on Friday against Victoria Yu from Wesleyan.
Allen swept through her first two rounds of singles defeating the No. 7 seed Christina Puccinelli from Middleybury 6-1, 6-4 and Diane Aboubakare from Kenyon 6-2, 6-3. The freshman will next face top seeded Chung.
In women's double four team were selected to compete and all four posted first round wins to advance to the quarterfinals. Allen and Katie Kousman from CMS defeated Joulia Likhanskaia and Sam Stalder from Bowdoin 6-2, 6-2. Allen and Kousman will face Chong and Yu from Wesleyan setting up a second meeting of the day for Allen and Chong.
From Redlands Ikioka and Elizabeth Johnson made their first appearance as a team at the NCAAs and after overcoming a first set loss defeated Ashnaa Roa and Mikey Barthelmass from Johns Hopkins 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. The Bulldogs team will face Humphreys and McGuire from Wisconsin-Whitewater tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
Emily Chen and Zhao took on Katherine Hughes and Skylar Schossberger from Middlebury. The Sagehens battled to a three set win (4-6, 6-2, 6-4) with Chen serving out an epic game to clinch the match. They will face the top team from Emory, Katarina Su and Bridget Harding.
Lindsay Brown and Tan avenged a loss from the team quarterfinals and defeated Rebecca Ho and Kaylan Griffith (Wash U) 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. The Athenas will face Atkinson and Henderson from Williams.
On the men's side Chase Lipscomb from Redlands defeated No. 4 Mohanad Al-Houni from Gustavus 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 before falling to Grant Urken of Bowdoin 6-2, 6-3. Senior Jake Yasgoor from Pomona-Pitzer drew the top seed of the tournament Lubomir Cuba from Middlebury and suffered a 6-3, 7-5 loss. Glenn Hull from CMS faced off against Brendan Metzler, the runner-up from last years' individual tournament, and fell 6-3, 6-1.
Nikolai Parodi from CMS continued his singles winning streak in Chattanooga and defeated Ben Rosen from Bates in the opening round 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. He then notched a win over local favorite Avery Schober from Sewanee 6-4, 7-5. The freshman will face Jeremy Dubin from John Hopkins on Friday morning. Fellow Stag Daniel Morkovine defeated Herman Abban from Carthage 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round and then advanced to the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Luke Tercek from Bowdoin. The senior will face Nicolas Chua (Chicago) on Friday morning.
In doubles Mohanad Al-Houni and Patrick Whaling from Gustavus defeated Joey Dulle and Jake Ly from Redlands 6-3, 6-2. Pomona-Pitzer's Antony Bello and Spencer Simonides would drop two close sets 7-6, 7-6 to Justin Ancona and Matt Steiner from Wheaton.
