2015 SCIAC Swimming and Diving Championships - Preview

PASADENA, Calif – Conference Swimming and Diving teams will compete at the SCIAC Championships hosted by California Lutheran University and held at Whittier College from Thursday, February 19-22, 2015. This year will mark a change in the results of the Championships will determine the conference champion as well as qualify individuals for the NCAA Division III Championships. Previously a champion was named based on a points awarded during the regular season together with those at the championships.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges enter the meet at the top of both the men's and women's SCIAC standings each at 8-0. This record puts the CMS 2015 senior class (women and men) at 62-0 in SCIAC dual-meets over four seasons. This impressive feet has not been matched by another SCIAC swim & dive program.

Five CMS Stags hold the best times in seven swimming events: Cameron Whiting (200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle), Patrick Shultz (100-yard butterfly), Matthew Williams (100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke), Alex Mendoza (1650-yard freestyle), Alex Poltash (100-yard freestyle). In diving, James Stevick sits as the highest seed in both the 1-meter and 3-meter events. CMS won the SCIAC Championships in 2014 and went on to place ninth in the National Championships.

Pomona-Pitzer and California Lutheran University follow closely behind CMS. Brothers Daniel Toand Samuel To led  the Sagehens into a seconc place regular season record. Sophomore Daniel ranks second in school history in the backstroke, while Samuel set a school record in the 100-yard butterfly in his last trip to Commerce in the Collegiate Winter Invitational. Senior Ryan Brem of Cal Lutheran holds three of four school diving records (1-, 3-(6) and 3-(11)). In one of the strongest men's swimming and diving teams in Kingsmen program history Kingsmen swimmer Zach Lozaholds three school records as well (100 Free, 200 Free, 500 Free). Transfers Jonathan Hall and Ore Wahnishe have made big splashes for the Kingsmen and will make some noise at the conference championships.

Look for Jeff Depew, a University of Redlands All American, to swim strong for the Maroon and Gray after winning nearly every one of his races this season and building upon the momentum from capturing the three-peat in the NCAA Individual Medley National Championship.  Mike Sanchez of the University of La Verne owns the seasons' fastest times in both the 100 (57.11) and the 200 breaststroke (2:05.78), but he will have to fend off Occidental's Steven van Deventer, the two-time defending SCIAC champion in both events.

The Poets of Whittier College are led by seniors Kurt HolzmullerGabe Lane, and Filip Dajkovic.  Dajkovich looks to return to the National stage as he looks to post the fastest 50 Free time during the Championships for the second straight year. California Institute of technology will be bringing 400 Free Relay team of Henry BaerChris BradleyKevin Yu, Patric Eck that hold the school record in the event. Medal-hopefuls for the Chapman University Panthers include freshmen divers Joey Luba (men's) as well as rookie swimmer Jonathan Lee.

The diving preliminary rounds begin on Thursday at 10:30 a.m. then each day begins at 9:00 a.m. with morning preliminaries and followed by afternoon finals in diving and evening finals in swimming.
