The fourth-seeded Chapman men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Occidental in Saturday evening's 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament championship game in Los Angeles, Calif.
With the win, Chapman improves to 11-7-1 overall and secures the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship. This is Chapman's first SCIAC Postseason Tournament championship, having reached the title game in 2012 and then again in 2016. The selection show is set for Monday, November 5 at 10 a.m.
Chapman opened the scoring early in the first half as Tobi Howe headed in a beautiful from Zach Matteoni to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of play. Chapman finished the first half with just the one shot on goal, while Occidental notched three shots on target as Panthers goalkeeper Chandler Siemonsma notched two saves.
Occidental had a chance at netting the equalizer when Liam Walsh scorched a shot from 40 yards out early in the second half but Siemonsma was there once again to turn away the attempt.
The Tigers finished with five shots on goal but could not find an equalizer, while Chapman was on frame twice with Howe's goal proving the difference in the contest. Walsh and Ben Simon notched two shots on goal each for Occidental, while Adrian Paredes added one shot on net. Howe registered both shots on goal for the Panthers.
Siemonsma stopped four shots in the winning effort, earning a clean sheet and the tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in the process.
