The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) men's golf team was slated to finish first in the 2019 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Preseason Poll as recently voted on by the league's member head coaches.
CMS received seven of eight first place votes en route to 61 points. The Stags were impressive throughout the 2017-18 season notching a combined score of 2020 over the two-day SCIAC No. 1 and No. 2 events, and the three-round SCIAC Championships. CMS carded totals of 286, 282 and 287 during the conference championship to earn a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship where the Stags placed ninth overall.
In a narrow vote for second in the preseason voting, Redlands and La Verne each collected scores of 51, with the Bulldogs also gaining a first place vote. Redlands finished last season in third place with 2059 total strokes, while the Leopards were just in front with 2053 strokes over the seven rounds of SCIAC No. 1 and No. 2, and the league championship.
Chapman finished fourth in the preseason vote with 38 points, while California Lutheran was three points behind with 35. Last year, the Kingsmen (2064) held a 32-stroke advantage in fourth place over the Panthers who had a total score of 2096 after the seven rounds of SCIAC play.
Sixth place went to Pomona-Pitzer (27 points), while Occidental (14) edged Whittier (11) in the voting for seventh and eighth respectively. The Sagehens posted 2101 strokes a year ago, while the Tigers (2129) and Poets (2146) followed.
CMS enters the spring portion of the 2018-19 season ranked fourth, while Redlands is 10th, La Verne 14th, and Chapman 22nd in the latest Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Top 25 Poll.
