The No. 11 Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team fell to No. 2 Whitman, 83-74 in Saturday night's NCAA Division III Championship Second Round contest in Walla Walla, Wash. on the campus of pod-host Whitman.
With the loss Pomona-Pitzer concludes its season 26-3 overall, while Whitman improves to 28-1 on the season and advances to the NCAA Sweet 16 next weekend. The Sagehens, which held a 36-34 lead at halftime, handed Whitman their lone loss of the regular season - a 112-109 2OT thriller on Nov. 24.
Pomona-Pitzer shot 50% from the field and 37.5% from three-point range in the first half as Alex Preston led the Sagehens with 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting in the first 20 minutes.
In a game that was a tale of two halves, Whitman shot 51.5% as Austin Butler led the way with 13 points. Joey Hewitt and Darne Duckett followed with 11 points each. Daniel Rosenbaum contributed 13 points in the second half for Pomona-Pitzer but it was not enough.
Rosenbaum finished with a team-high 20 points and six rebounds, while Preston added 14 points. Corbin Koch notched eight rebounds, while James Kelbert chipped in 13 points in reserve.
