Offensive Athlete of the Week

Name: Miguel Avina
School: Whittier
Year: Sophomore
Position: Quarterback
Hometown: Indio, Calif.

Miguel Avina led Whittier to a 38-26 victory over Luther in the 2019 season-opener - the Poets' first home victory since the 2014 season. Avina was 16-for-22 through the air (72.7%) for 178 yards and three touchdowns. In addition to his 8.1 yards/attempt average and long of 51 yards, Avina also rushed the ball 16 times for 60 yards (3.8 yards per carry) and scored twice with a long run of 13 yards. 

Defensive Athlete of the Week

Name: Dillon Keefe
School: Chapman
Year: Junior
Position: Linebacker
Hometown: Morgan Hill, Calif.

Chapman's Dillon Keefe helped the Panthers stake a 45-14 win over Pacific (Ore.) in the 2019 opener after the linebacker made six solo tackles. Three of his tackles went for a loss of a combined 20 yards, highlighted by two quarterback sacks for 19 yards. He also forced a fumble and blocked a punt in Chapman's win.

Name: Arturo Herrera-Caballero
School: La Verne
Year: Sophomore
Position: Wide Receiver/Punter
Hometown: Corona, Calif.

Despite a 50-24 loss to No. 11 Whitworth, Arturo Herrera-Caballero had an effective day punting for La Verne. The sophomore wide receiver punted 11 times for 462 yards - averaging 42.0 yards per kick. His longest punt of the afternoon was a career-best 69-yard boot.
