2018 SCIAC Football Athletes of the Week

Offensive Athlete of the Week - September 3, 2018
Annie Leonard IAN FIEBER
Chapman | Senior | Quarterback | Mission Viejo, Calif. 


Ian Fieber was terrific for Chapman in a 36-6 victory over Pacific (Ore.) to open the season. Fieber was 21-for-29 through the air for 351 yards and five touchdowns. All five of his scoring tosses were for at least 19 yards with a long throw of 53 yards. In addition to his 72.4% passing efficiency, Fieber was 9-for-9 in the second half, helping the Panthers pull away to the victory.

Defensive Athlete of the Week - September 3, 2018
CARL HOLMES
Redlands | Sophomore | Defensive Back | Fresno, Calif 


Carl Holmes helped Redlands secure a hard-fought, 20-12 victory over George Fox in the 2018 season-opener. Holmes led the Bulldogs with seven tackles, including six solo stops and recorded a pair of pass break-ups. He also registered a blocked field goal recovery helping Redlands secure its eight-point victory.

BEN BRUCE
Chapman | Senior | Tight End | Portland, Ore.  


A tight end featuring for Chapman on special teams, Ben Bruce scored the Panthers’ final points of their 36-6 victory over Pacific (Ore.) when he wrapped up the punter in the endzone for a safety. The senior from Portland, Ore. also nearly blocked a punt in the 2018 opener.

Offensive Athlete of the Week - September 10, 2018

KARTER ODERMANN
Pomona-Pitzer | Junior | Quarterback | Lenexa, Kan.


Pomona-Pitzer junior Karter Odermann, who is listed as a quarterback, had a career-day receiving, hauling in three touchdown catches, and making five receptions overall including a long of 53 yards. In addition to totaling 129 receiving yards, he also went 7-for-10 under center for 81 yards and touchdown, with a long toss of 47 yards to give him four scoring plays. The Sagehens defeated Lewis & Clark, 34-21.

Defensive Athlete of the Week - September 10, 2018

ETHAN PULLEY
Cal Lutheran | Junior | Linebacker | Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.


Ethan Pulley helped Cal Lutheran to a 24-8 victory over Pacific Lutheran in the Kingsmen’s season-opener. The junior linebacker from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. made 11 total tackles (four solo, seven assisted) and also registered a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown with 2:18 to play in the third quarter.

Specialist of the Week - September 10, 2018

COOPER ALLEN
Whittier | Sophomore | Kicker/Punter | Visalia, Calif.


Whittier sophomore specialist Cooper Allen highlighted the special teams effort for the Poets in a 67-42 loss to Arizona Christian. Allen averaged 38.8 yards per punt including a long of 48, with two kicks landing inside the 20-yardline. In addition to being featured in the punting game six times and racking up 233 yards in the category, Allen was also a perfect 6-for-6 in extra-point attempts.

Offensive Athlete of the Week - September 17, 2018
Annie Leonard BRIAN PHELAN
Whittier | Senior | Wide Receiver | Chino Hills, Calif.


Despite a 46-27 setback against Lewis & Clark, Brian Phelan of Whittier had a terrific day for the Poets. The senior wideout hauled in six catches for 176 yards and registered two touchdowns. He averaged 29.3 yards per catch, and had a long reception of 73 yards. In addition, he also rushed one time for 31 yards and a score to give him 207 all-purpose yards in the contest.

Defensive Athlete of the Week - September 17, 2018
TROY KAY
Redlands | Senior | Defensive Lineman | New York City, N.Y.


Troy Kay helped the Redlands defense allow just 13 points to Linfield, in a 13-0 loss. Kay controlled the line of scrimmage for the Bulldogs, notching seven total tackles (four solo, three assisted), and picked up two sacks for a loss of 14 yards. Overall, he finished with three stops for negative yardage (16) in Redlands’ first setback of the season.

ELIAS DEEB
Chapman | Junior | Punter | Newport Beach, Calif. 
 


In Chapman’s narrow, 31-28 defeat to Whitworth, Elias Deeb helped the Panthers control field position in the punting game. The junior from Newport Beach, Calif. placed three of his four punts inside the 20 for a total of 174 yards (43.5 average). He connected for a long boot of 48 yards, and placed one of his kicks out of bounds at the 4-yardline.

Offensive Athlete of the Week - September 24, 2018

California Lutheran | Senior | Running Back | Hemet, Calif.


In Cal Lutheran’s 49-24 loss to Wisconsin-Stout, Kingsmen senior running back Chris Anderson had a tremendous performance in the ground game racking up 127 yards on 24 carries with a touchdown. The senior from Hemet, Calif. averaged 5.3 yards per carry with a long scamper of 38 yards to highlight the effort against the Wisconsin-Stout top-25 defense.

Specialist of the Week - September 24, 2018
CHRISTIAN ANTEZANA
California Lutheran | Junior | Kicker | Lafayette, Calif.


Despite Cal Lutheran’s 49-24 setback to Wisconsin-Stout, placekicker Christian Antezana delivered the first points of the game. The junior Lafayette, Calif. native connected for a career-long 48-yard field goal with 1:57 to play in the first quarter to cap a seven-play, 49-yard drive that gave the Kingsmen an early 3-0 advantage. He was also a perfect 3-for-3 on extra point attempts, and amassed 306 yards on five kickoffs (61.2 yards per kick).

Offensive Athlete of the Week - October 1, 2018

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps | Sophomore | Quarterback | Orangevale, Calif. 


Jake Norville of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) guided the Stags to a 37-24, SCIAC-opening victory over La Verne. The sophomore quarterback was 16-for-25 for 207 yards and four touchdowns with a long completion of 37 yards. The Orangevale, Calif. native connected on 64% of his pass attempts for an efficiency rating of 186.4.

Defensive Athlete of the Week - October 1, 2018
MARVIN PERKINS JR.
Redlands | Sophomore | Defensive Back | Las Vegas, Nev.


Redlands’ defensive back Marvin Perkins Jr. helped the Bulldogs seal a hard-fought, 15-13 win over Pomona-Pitzer leading all players with 10 total tackles, including one for a loss of 23 yards. He also recorded three pass break-ups and hauled in a pair of interceptions and returned those passes for a total of 14 yards to help Redlands secure the close victory.

ELIAS HACKNEY
Redlands | Junior | Defensive Lineman | Santa Monica, Calif. 


In Redlands’ 15-13 SCIAC victory over Pomona-Pitzer, Bulldogs’ junior defensive lineman Elias Hackney had a tremendous game on special teams. The Santa Monica, Calif. native blocked two Sagehens field goal attempts to help Redlands to the two-point victory. He also contributed three tackles in the winning effort.

Annie Leonard NATHAN MARTINEZ
Redlands | Sophomore | Quarterback | Redlands, Calif. 


Redlands’ sophomore quarterback Nathan Martinez entered midway through the first quarter of the Bulldogs’ 39-26 victory over Chapman and was 16-for-22 for 257 yards and three touchdowns. The Redlands, Calif. native connected for a long scoring strike of 74 yards in addition to racking up 83 yards on 15 carries. In addition, he finished with a 72.7 completion percentage, and an efficiency rating of 215.9.

Defensive Athlete of the Week - October 8, 2018
ETHAN PULLEY
Cal Lutheran | Junior | Linebacker | Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.


California Lutheran linebacker Ethan Pulley earned his second SCIAC weekly award after posting a career-high 22 tackles in a hard-fought, 17-10 loss to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS). The junior from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. helped the Kingsmen hold the Stags to 251 yards of total offense, including just 52 yards through the air.

Specialist of the Week - October 8, 2018
TATE TUSSING
Pomona-Pitzer | Sophomore | Defensive Back | Menlo, Calif. 


Pomona-Pitzer defensive back Tate Tussing helped the Sagehens pull away to a 34-7 victory over La Verne with his play on special teams. With 5:01 left in the first quarter, Tussing scampered 96 yards on a kickoff return for a touchdown to give Pomona-Pitzer a 14-7 lead. Tussing later intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter and returned the ball 71 yards to set up the final scoring drive of the game.

Offensive Athlete of the Week - October 15, 2018

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps | Senior | Offensive Lineman | San Diego, Calif. 


Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) senior offensive lineman Brian Wahl helped the Stags secure a 20-10 victory over Redlands in SCIAC action leading a unit that racked up 187 yards on the ground. Previously, the Bulldogs had only allowed 33 rushing yards per game. CMS completed the victory with a 16-play (15 plays on the ground), 86-yard touchdown drive that spanned 10:16 of the fourth quarter. The Stags finished with a pair of rushing TDs.

Defensive Athlete of the Week - October 15, 2018
TY LOZANO
California Lutheran | Senior | Defensive Back | Bakersfield, Calif.


California Lutheran defensive back Ty Lozano helped the Kingsmen to a come-from-behind win over Pomona-Pitzer, 28-24. Lozano finished with eight tackles, including a pair of second-half sacks for a loss of 15 yards, and registered an interception and a pass break-up as Cal Lutheran held the Sagehens scoreless in the second half.

Specialist of the Week - October 15, 2018
NICO RAGAS
Chapman | Sophomore | Wide Receiver | Lakewood, Calif.


Chapman sophomore wide receiver Nico Ragas contributed to Chapman’s 62-0 victory over Occidental with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. The Lakewood, Calif. native has now registered back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns as he raced 100-yards for a score on the final kick of last week’s game at Redlands.
