FOOTBALL: Birir, Godina Named to CoSIDA Academic All-America Team

> CoSIDA Academic All-America Release

Pomona-Pitzer senior running back Aseal Birir, and Redlands junior offensive lineman Christian Godina were named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Team as announced recently by the organization.

Twenty-six of the 42 members of the 2017 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division III Football teams have at least a 3.90 GPA, with five student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.00 GPA. The 25 members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.92.

The Division III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 Division III Academic All-America® teams program.

An aspiring doctor, Birir posted a 3.78 grade point average as a chemistry major. On the field, the senior had an outstanding season on the field, boasting 1,334 all-purpose yards and 17 touchdowns.

"From day one he's been a driven and focused student and athlete," said Head Coach John Walsh. "He's the definition of what we look for in a Sagehen football player."

During Redlands' 7-2 season, Godina worked his way into the starting rotation for a team that racked up 4,456 yards of total offense to rank seventh in all of NCAA Division III.  He helped the Bulldogs earn an impressive balance on offense with 243.9 rushing yards per game and 251.2 passing yards per game. This repeat Dean's List member also contributed to the scoring offense that ranked 13th in the nation at 41.0 points per game.

A likely three-time SCIAC All-Academic member, Godina boasts a near-perfect GPA, one that well exceeds the minimum requirement of 3.30 for the CoSIDA academic distinction. Furthermore, this Redlands Scholar-Athlete looks forward to completing his degree in Biology in 2019.
