2017 SCIAC Football Athletes of the Week

Annie Leonard Nathan Hierlihy
Junior • Placekicker • Redondo Beach, California


Hierlihy was stellar for the Bulldogs, converting 4-of-5 field goal attempts including a program-record 55-yard attempt in a 32-7 victory over Trinity (Texas). He also hit on field goals of 25, 40 and 50 yards, averaged nearly 50 yards per punt, and 64.4 yards per kickoff. For his efforts in the Bulldogs’ season-opener on Sept. 2, the junior/senior, Redondo Beach, Calif. native was also named to the D3football Team of the Week.

Adam Friederichsen
Cal Lutheran
Senior • Quarterback • Westlake Village, California


Friederichsen was superb in the Kingsmen’s 28-13 victory over Willamette. The senior quarterback was 23-for-30 through the air with four touchdown passes. The Westlake Village, Calif. native was an impressive 14-for-15 in the first half, and his longest completion of the game was a 54-yard toss to Aaron Lacombe. Friederichsen finished with a completion percentage and averaged 9.5 yards per pass as Cal Lutheran improved to 2-0 on the season.

Jacob Isabel
Senior • Wide Receiver • Pleasanton, California


Isabel was terrific despite a 41-35 overtime loss to Trinity (Texas) on Saturday. Isabel registered 109 receiving yards on just four catches including a long reception of 57 yards as well as a touchdown. A versatile threat for the Panthers, Isabel also featured on Chapman’s special teams units notching 144 yards on three kickoff returns including a 96-yard scamper for a touchdown. The senior wideout from Pleasanton, Calif. also rushed for nine yards on two carries, including a reverse for eight yards.

Joe Mudie
Senior • Running Back • La Canada, California


Mudie was stellar out of the Panthers’ backfield carrying the ball 21 times and picking up 104 yards on the ground, while also hauling in a pair of passes for 32 yards. Mudie’s biggest contribution came on the final play of the game as he found the endzone for the game-winning score in a 42-40 victory over Pomona-Pitzer to kickoff SCIAC action. Mudie was not brought down in the backfield against the Sagehens and has not been tackled for a loss in three games this season.

Aseal Birir
Senior • Running Back • Novato, California


Birir was tremendous on the ground for Pomona-Pitzer in a 43-41 loss to Cal Lutheran. Birir racked up 275 rushing yards which set a Sagehens’ single-game rushing record, and found the endzone five times. The Novato, Calif. native had a long TD run of 60 yards in the second quarter, and a 23-yard scamper in the fourth quarter. He also scored on runs of five, three and one yards as he accounted for all but one of Pomona-Pitzer’s six scores on the day.

Ricky Bautista
Senior • Quarterback • Irvine, California


Bautista led Chapman to a 45-26 victory as the Panthers remained unbeaten in SCIAC competition and improve to 3-0. Baustista was 21-for-29 through the air for 414 yards, becoming the first Chapman quarterback to throw for over 400 yards in multiple games in his career. He tossed four touchdown passes for the second straight week and also found the endzone with his legs for the Panthers’ first score of the game. The senior from Irvine, Calif. hurled scoring passes of 69, 29, 21, and 28 yards.

Levi Plante
Junior • Quarterback • Lake Arrowhead, California


Plante led Redlands to a 42-25 victory over CMS on Oct. 21. The junior quarterback connected on 21-of-34 passes for 298 yards and tossed three touchdowns. The Lake Arrowhead, Calif. native notched scoring strikes of 19, 34 and eight yards. Plante was also the Bulldogs’ leading rusher in the game, as he collected 143 yards on 15 rushing attempts with a long run of 67 yards. Plante completed passes to five different receivers in the win against the Stags, including a long pass of 37 yards.

Ricky Bautista
Senior • Quarterback • Irvine, California


Bautista led Chapman to a 46-38 victory over Cal Lutheran, helping the Panthers clinch the SCIAC automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championship and at least a share of the conference title. Bautista was 22-for-28 for 309 yards and six touchdowns and broke the Chapman single-season passing TD record of 22. Bautista completed 70% of his passes for the fifth straight time this season in the win over the Kingsmen, and registered his fourth 300-plus yard game.

Dillon Keefe
First-Year • Linebacker • Orange, California


Keefe highlighted Chapman’s defensive efforts in a 48-38 victory over CMS. The win over the Stags sealed the Panthers’ perfect, 6-0 SCIAC season, and clinched the conference title outright for Chapman. Keefe led the Panthers with nine tackles, including three for a loss, with two sacks. He also recovered a fumble in the second quarter to help setup a 21-point second stanza for Chapman.

Nathan Hierlihy

Hierlihy of Redlands led the Bulldogs to a 21-17 victory over Cal Lutheran in the season finale by converting 5-of-6 field goal attempts. Hierlihy’s 83% efficiency was highlighted by a 50-yard kick as the junior accounted for 15 of his team’s 21 points in the winning effort. Hierlihy was also effective in the punting game as he provided for punts for an averag of 45.3 yards with a long of 55 yards. He also booted seven kickoffs with five resulting in a touchback.
