It was recently announced that University of Redlands defensive line coach/special teams coordinator David Lord is among the 34 NCAA football coaches to be selected to attend the 2017 NCAA and NFL Coaches Academy on February 9-12 in Tampa, Florida.
Lord becomes the second assistant coach under Head Coach Mike Maynard’s direction to be selected for this elite experience, following Defensive Coordinator Joey Mariani’s appointment in 2013.
“I am greatly honored to be chosen to attend the 2017 NFL and NCAA Coaches Academy. This is a great opportunity for me to learn how to become a better coach and a more effective administrator from the best in the coaching profession,” Lord commented.
This unique professional development opportunity was created in 2011 as a collaborative effort between NCAA leadership enhancement and NFL Player Engagement to boost diversity in the college game. The chosen NCAA coaches have less than eight years of college coaching experience with a desire to learn and network with other football professionals at variety of levels. Coaches will be trained in ways that promote effective coaching and awareness of student-athlete development. In addition, topics covered at the academy include effective communication with campus and community organizations, building a holistic culture of success for student-athletes, budget management, and coaching philosophies and strategies.
This year’s keynote speakers and panelists include a variety of athletic directors, current and former NCAA and NFL head coaches, and football industry experts.
Lord is the sole representative of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and one of only six coaches from NCAA Division III schools. After previously working at Redlands from 2009 to 2011, he rejoined the Bulldog football staff last February and helped guide the team to a conference title and first-round playoff appearance. He also boasts college coaching experience from his time at Millsaps College in Mississippi, where he guided the offensive line to a pair of nationally-ranked seasons in sacks allowed.
“I am thrilled that Coach Lord was chosen for this opportunity. He has high standards and expectations for his players and himself. He never stops learning and I know this opportunity will extend his coaching acumen in a way that everyone in Bulldog football will profit,” stated Maynard.
