Redlands Football Captures SCIAC Championship with 7-0 Record

The University of Redlands (8-1 overall) took the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title with a perfect 7-0 record after a 34-30 win over rival Cal Lutheran on Saturday. This marks the 30 SCIAC Championship for the Bulldogs.

The battle with Cal Lutheran, dubbed the “Battle of the Smudge Pot,” has gone to the Bulldogs now for the fourth consecutive year. The game was also marked as Senior Day for Redlands, which allowed the team to acknowledge the contributions and commitments of 29 student-athletes in their final game in Ted Runner Stadium.

In his 28th season with the Bulldogs head coach Mike Maynard has consistently established himself as one of the top small college coaches in the West Region, if not the entire nation. Including this season Maynard's teams have posted a winning percentage of .795 in conference play.

The team's only loss in the 2016 season came in their first game of the season back on September 3 in a 27-34 final on the road against Trinity (Tex.).

The Bulldogs will head to the NCAA Division III Championships with the SCIAC's automatic bid. The selection show will air on November 13  at 3:00 p.m.
