Senior third baseman Ryan Motter of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) earned one of nine spots on the national Rawlings NCAA Division III Gold Glove Team as recently announced by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
The Rawlings Gold Glove Award, which is voted on by an ABCA Division III coaches committee, rewards the top defensive players nationally at each position. Motter earned this year's award after a spectacular defensive season, which saw him commit only two errors all season while recording a .982 fielding percentage at the difficult third base position. Both of his errors this year also came as a result of tricky hops off the lip of the grass which came up and hit him in the chest, leaving him very close to having an unheard of perfect season defensively on the left side of the infield.
Motter wasn't just a defensive specialist either, as he also had a strong season at the plate, finishing the year with a .320 batting average, a .411 on-base percentage and seven stolen bases without being caught. He also led the Stags with 36 runs scored and had a 12-game hitting streak that lasted from March 1 to March 24.
Motter's efforts helped CMS to a 19-14-1 record this season, the program's best record since the 2011 team finished 23-17. The Stags also ended in fifth place in the SCIAC at 12-12, remaining in the race for one of the four playoff spots until the final week of the regular season.
