NCAA Baseball Championship - Day 5 Recap

NCAA Baseball Championship - Day 5 Recap

With the score knotted at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Cooper Foard scored on an RBI single to center field as the Chapman baseball team secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Concordia (Texas) to win the best-of-three Orange, Calif. Super Regional at Hart Park in the 2019 NCAA Division III Championship and now advances to the eight-team Division III World Series.

With the win, Chapman improves to 38-11 overall and sees its historic season continue May 31-June 4/5 in the double-elimination, best-of-three finals tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Concordia concludes its season, 37-13 overall.

In a game that featured just 12 hits between the two teams, Chapman took an early lead in the bottom of the third inning when Jarod Penniman scored on a wild pitch. The Panthers then used another errant pitch to home score its second run - this one in the bottom of the sixth - as Tristan Kevitch scored.

Tyler Peck was terrific on the mound for Chapman, notching six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and just four hits allowed before being replaced by Nick Garcia in the seventh.

Concordia finally answered with a pair of runs in the top of the eighth as an RBI walk with the bases loaded, and an RBI bunt single allowed the visitors to even the score at 2-2.

Pinch-hitting to lead off the ninth for the Panthers, Kevin Gregersen drew a free pass and was pinch run for by Foard. Penniman executed a sacrifice bunt sending sending Foard to second, before Wong delivered the heroic two-out RBI single two batters later allowing Foard to come home with the game-winning run.

Garcia earned the win after pitching three innings of relief. He allowed two runs - neither earned - on one hit and struck out four batters.
