The Chapman baseball team used a four-run third inning to help secure an 11-3 victory over Concordia (Texas) in game one of the best-of-three NCAA Division III Orange, Calif. Super Regional Friday afternoon at Hart Park in Orange, Calif.
With the win, Chapman improves to 37-11 overall, while Concordia moves to 37-12 on the season. The teams will meet again Saturday, May 25 at 11 a.m. and then again at 3 p.m. if necessary.
Jonathan Hernandez earned the complete-game victory for the Panthers allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits while striking out five.
After falling behind, 1-0 in the bottom of the first, Chapman answered with four in the top of the third as Aaron Wong scored on a wild pitch before Henry Zeisler cranked a three-run homer to right field. Zeisler homered again in the top of the sixth to start a three-run sixth inning for Chapman that also saw Drew Littwin and Wong provide run-scoring hits.
The Panthers scored twice more in the seventh as Joe Jimenez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to send a run home, while Mack Cheli drove in a run with a fielder's choice to the right side.
A free pass with the bases loaded issued to Littwin in the top of the ninth, and a double play ground out by Wong sent home the final runs of the game as Chapman pulled away for a convincing, 11-3 victory.
