The 2019 All-Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) baseball teams were announced Thursday following a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches.
The 2019 SCIAC Athlete of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors went to La Verne's Christopher Peres. In 24 conference games played in 2019, Peres logged a .295 batting average with 28 hits, eight doubles, two home runs and 18 RBI. He also drew eight walks and stole a base in addition to posting a .358 on-base percentage and a .442 slugging percentage. Peres was also a first-team all-league selection a year ago. On the mound, Peres ranks second in the SCIAC with 8 saves, ranks third with a 1.98 ERA, and seventh with 8.12 strikeouts per nine innings. Peres also finished the regular season with four wins an no losses.
Nolan McCarthy of Occidental was voted the 2019 SCIAC Pitcher of the Year and a First Team All-SCIAC honoree. The junior hurler logged a 6-2 record in eight starts during the SCIAC slate including six complete-game efforts. He led the conference in innings pitched (65.0), ERA (1.80) and was second in strikeouts with 58. He recorded double-digit strikeouts three times against league foes, including a mark of 12 agianst Caltech (April 12), and Redlands (May 3).
Whittier's Dane Goodman was voted the 2019 SCIAC Newcomer of the Year after a stellar debut campaign. Also a first team all-conference recipient, Goodman registered a .365 batting average with 27 hits, three doubles, two triples, four homers, and 23 runs driven in. He walked 10 times and swiped five bases while tallying a .442 on-base percentage and a .622 slugging percentage.
The Poets' Brandon Mulrooney was named the Character Award winner. A starter in 141 or 144 career games over four years and a three-time team captain, Mulrooney boasts a 3.68 GPA in his Kinesiology and Exercise Science major at Whittier. In 2019, he hit .302 in conference play with 29 hits, including seven doubles, and nine RBI.
Head coach Scott Laverty and the Chapman staff earned 2019 SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year honors. After leading the Panthers to the SCIAC Postseason Tournament title a year ago, Laverty guided Chapman to the top seed in this year's edition of the league playoffs as the Panthers to a 30-9 overall ledger that was highlighted by a 19-5 record in conference play. This is Laverty's first postseason honor.
