THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – No. 3 Redlands defeated No. 2 Chapman, 17-8, for the second-straight day of the 2017 SCIAC Baseball Tournament to eliminate the Panthers and advance to the championship series vs. No. 1 Cal Lutheran on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m.
Cal Lutheran edged No. 3 Redlands, 4-3, in the winners bracket and will have to win just one game on Sunday to earn the NCAA’s Automatic Berth. Cal Lutheran scored all four runs by the top of the sixth before Redlands evened the score. Redlands scored once in the six, once in the eighth and the bottom of the ninth. In the ninth, Redlands started with a double by Will Hall. A fly out and sac fly by Christian Conci drove Hall in but a strikeout ended the game. Nate Wehner (7-3) earned the win for Cal Lutheran and Miguel Salud got his eighth save of the year. Redlands then played Chapman in the final elimination game of the day after the Panthers edged No. 4 La Verne, 8-7.
In game one of the day, Chapman scored the winning run in the top of the ninth after a back-and-forth game. A Jarod Penniman single drove in Christian Cosby for the winning run. The teams combined for 26 hits and used seven pitchers. Jakob Thomas had two doubles and three RBI to lead the Leopards while Tyler Cook hit a home run and had four RBI in the game for the Panthers. In the day’s final game, Chapman and Redlands each scored four in their half of the first inning. Redlands added two in the second and one in the third for a 7-4 lead.
The Panthers took an 8-7 lead in the top of the fifth and the Bulldogs tied it in the bottom half of the inning. Nine runs in the next three innings sixth and seventh gave Redlands the victory. Christian Conci homered for Redlands for the winning run in the sixth.
