On day one of the 2017 SCIAC Baseball Tournament, No. 3 Redlands upset No. 2 Chapman, 5-4. All tied at 4-4 going into the ninth inning, Brendan Gardiner scored the winning run on a passed ball. Felix Minjarez (12-1) pitched the complete game for Redlands, allowing 10 hits and striking out seven. Mason Collins (4-1) was handed his first loss of the year for Chapman in relief.
No. 1 Cal Lutheran defeated No. 4 La Verne 6-2. Cal Lutheran scored twice in the first and added to its lead in the third, seventh and eighth. They had five doubles in the game. Jakob Thomas hit a solo home run for La Verne and, in the ninth, they scored on a passed ball. Christopher Peres (6-2) took the loss for the Leopards allowing three runs in the first two innings. Marshall Pautsch (7-2) earned the win for Cal Lutheran allowing just four runs while striking out seven in seven innings of work.
On Saturday, all games will be played at Cal Lutheran with La Verne taking on Chapman at 8:30 a.m. in an elimination game. Cal Lutheran will then host Redlands at 11:30 a.m. The winner of game one will face the loser of game two on the day in an elimination game at 2:30 p.m.
