2017 Baseball All-Conference Team

2017 Baseball All-Conference Team

The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) has announced its 2017 baseball end of the year awards, as voted upon by the league's nine head coaches. The awards include Athlete of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Newcomer and Coaching Staff of the Year, First Team and Second Team and the Sportsmanship team.

Tanner Nishioka picked up Athlete of the Year honors after leading not only the conference in average (.442), on-base percentage (.542), slugging percentage (.842) and home runs (nine), but also paced all of Division III with nearly a homer per game and .888 SLG.  He also locked down second base for the Sagehens, playing every game at the keystone where he recorded a .962 fielding percentage and turned 15 double plays.

The Pitcher of the Year, Felix Minjarez was every bit as dominant a player on the other side of the ball, leading the nation in wins (12) and topping the conference in innings pitched (59), strikeouts (69) and K/9 (10.53) while recording the lowest ERA of any player to start against all eight opponents (1.98).  He allowed fewer hits than innings pitched and surrendered just a single home run over seven quality starts, including three without a single earned run against.

Miguel Salud was named the Newcomer of the Year after anchoring the bullben for the Kingsmen earning three wins and six saves. He appeared in13 games in SCIAC play allowing only 19 hits in 23 innings, while striking out 18 batters.

Matt Mark and Caltech earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors after leading the Beavers to their first win in SCIAC play since 1988 with a walk-off 4-3 victory on Mar. 31.  His squad then notched a second conference win just two weeks later by a score of 13-12 on Apr. 15.  In Mark’s first season at Caltech, the Beavers won their first game in 10 years and have since increased their win percentage each year of his tenure, culminating in this year’s eight-win season.  His 2017 team set high-water marks in runs, hits, ERA and fielding percentage over his tenure while drawing significantly closer to the rest of the conference in multiple team statistics.
