The NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Individual Tennis Championships began Friday with singles rounds of 32 and 16, and doubles round of 32 at Stowe Stadium in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The men's round of 32 singles competition saw Claremont-Mudd-Scripps's (CM) Nikolai Parodi advance past Carnegie Mellon's Daniel Levine, 6-2, 6-3, while Redlands' Chase Lipscomb provided a 6-2, 6-2 win over Chicago's Jeremy Yuan. Varun Shanker of Caltech downed Johns Hopkins' Vishnu Joshi, 6-2, 6-3, while Jed Kronenberg of Pomona-Pitzer added a win over Chaz Downing, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). Jack Katzman of the Stags added a 6-2, 6-1 win over Patrick Whaling of Gustavus Adolphus.
In the round of 16, Parodi advanced past Lipscomb, 6-1, 6-3, while Shanker fell to Emory's Jonathan Jemison, 6-2, 6-4. Katzman fell to Sean Wei of Amherst, 6-1, 6-3, while Kronenberg was defeated by Washington University's Ethan Hillis, 6-2, 6-2.
Men's doubles saw the Redlands duo of Brad Cummins and Brysl Libao upend MIT's Tyler Barr and Alex Cauneac, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, while Chicago's Erik Kerrigan and Ninan Kumar secured a 6-1, 7-5 win over the CMS duo of Parodi and Julian Gordy.
In the women's round of 32 singles competition, Pomona-Pitzer's Maria Lyven defeated Risa Fukushige of Skidmore by retirement (1-6, 6-3, 1-1), while Caroline Casper dispatched Hope's Amanda Bandrowski, 6-2, 6-4. CMS's Catherine Allen defeated Wesleyan's (Conn.) Kristina Yu, 6-3, 6-3 while teammate Rebecca Berger secured a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Leah Bush of Williams to round out the SCIAC's four advancing women's singles players.
The Athenas' Nicole Tan fell to Carnegie Mellon's Danna Taylor, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 in a hard-fought contest, while Caltech's Kana Moriyama was defeated, 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 by Case Western's Madeleine Paolucci.
The round of 16 singles saw Allen advance past Paolucci, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, while Casper defeated Wisconsin-Whitewater's Gabrielle Kitchell, 6-4, 6-2.
