Whittier: Jafari Named Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Head Coach

Whittier Director of Athletics Rock Carter officially announced the hiring of Michael Jafari as the new head coach for the men's & women's swimming & diving team Thursday.

Michael currently serves as the Chairman on the USA Swimming, Southern California Swimming's Board of Directors. He is also the Head Coach and Owner of MAX Aquatics.  Last year he served as the Director of Aquatics and Head Coach for Women's Water Polo and Women's Swimming & Diving at East L.A. College.

"I'm honored to officially become part of the Whittier College Aquatics Family," Jafari stated. "There are so many great student-athletes that I look forward to growing and working with as we continue to have a positive Whittier College culture! Go POETS!"

Michael, a former Division I swimmer at University of California at Berkeley, who was a PAC-10 Academic All-American and Second Team All-Conference performer, led the Golden Bears to a fourth Place finish at the NCAA Championships in the 2007-08 season. He is a 10-time U.S. National Qualifier and was a member of the PAC-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

He double majored at UC Berkeley, getting degrees in Middle Eastern Studies and Pre-Med.

"I am really excited about the addition of Michael to the program," Carter stated. "The quality of candidates for the position was outstanding and Mike's qualities as a coach and person just stood out. Mike worked for a short time in the program this past season and showed us that he can not only improve the times of the quality athletes in the program, but can help create a culture that we are all proud of. His community and club connections are going to serve his program and institution well."
