Whittier: Rock Carter Named Director of Athletics

It was announced Tuesday that Rock Carter has just been named the new Director of Athletics and Special Assistant to the President at Whittier, and will serve on the President's Cabinet.

A former student-athlete himself, Carter served as head men's basketball coach for 22 years in addition to serving in athletic leadership as the senior associate director of athletics since 2006.

"I am very honored and thankful to President Oubre and the Board of Trustees to be named the Athletic Director at Whittier College, Carter stated.  "I look forward to working with President Oubre and her staff in aligning the student success initiatives with the goals of the athletic department.  During the past eight months in the interim role, the support and work of our coaches further inspired me to seek this position knowing that positive outcomes for our students was at the forefront of all of their agendas."

Prior to the new appointment, Carter was interim athletics director, where he implemented several initiatives focused on improving the student-athlete experience. A former adjunct faculty member, he understands the importance of connecting the Athletics staff with faculty and has worked to improve this relationship and instill a culture conducive to student success.

"I am very proud of the work Rock has done during this interim period and am particularly impressed with the demonstrated improvements in the academic performance and retention of our student-athletes," said President Linda Oubré.

Previously, Carter served as the interim director of athletics from 2004-2005. He spent 13 years as an instructor with the Department of Kinesiology, teaching courses in sport management, physical education, and fitness and wellness. He has also served on a number of College, SCIAC, and NCAA committees.

During the summer months Carter serves as director of the highly successful Whittier College Sports Camps and Swim Club, which serves over 500 families in Whittier and the surrounding communities. He is also director of Whittier's youth basketball camp.

At Whittier, Carter earned his B.As in physical education and an M.A. in education administration. As an undergraduate, he played two seasons with the Poet men's basketball team. He currently resides in Whittier with his wife Megan, daughter Caroline, and son Jacob '14, a recent graduate of the College.
