Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) student-athletes shine on day one of the individual NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Tennis Championships at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center in Claremont, Calif.
In the singles round of 32, CMS's Nikolai Parodi defeated Brady Anderson of Coe, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1, while the Stags' Jack Katzman notched a 6-4, 6-1 win over Jacob Zalenski of Kenyon. Pomona-Pitzer's Jed Kronenberg added a 6-3, 7-5 win over Ben Rosen of Bates in the round of 32.
The round of 16 saw Katzman down Carnegie Mellon's Daniel Levine, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the quarterfinals. Kronenberg also advanced to the round of eight as he defeated Bernardo Neves, 6-4, 6-2. Katzman will take on Kronenberg Friday.
Parodi downed Erik Kerrigan of Chicago, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and will take on Brian Grodecki of Williams in the quarterfinal round tomorrow.
In doubles, the Caltech duo of Varun Shanker and James Wei won their round of 16 match, downing Justin Cerny and David Reed of Christopher Newport, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. The tandem will take on the Middlebury pair of Lubomir Cuba and Kyle Schlanger in the round of eight tomorrow.
The CMS duo of Parodi and Julian Gordy fell to Bates' Jacob Kauppila and Ben Rosen, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 and is eliminated from doubles play.
In the singles round of 32, Catherine Allen of CMS secured a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Gabrielle Kitchell of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Lindsay Brown of the Athenas added a 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win over Claire Handa of Chicago. Nicole Tan was the third CMS player to move to the round of 16 as she bested Johanna Ranta-Aho of Christopher Newport, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.
Redlands' Sarah Ikioka was knocked off by Wesleyan's Eudice Chong, 6-1, 6-3, while Caroline Casper of Pomona-Pitzer advanced past Libby Rickeman of MIT, 6-3, 6-3.
In the round of 16, Allen advanced with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Lauren O'Malley of John Carroll, while Brown was eliminated in her next match, falling 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Katherine Hughes of Middlebury. Tan was also eliminated from singles play, falling to Heather Boehm of Middlebury, 6-2, 6-0. Allen will take on Elysa Kohrs of MIT tomorrow in the round of eight.
Casper also dispatched Amherst's Camile Smukler, 6-4, 7-5 in the round of 16, and will take on Julia Raventos of Williams tomorrow.
In doubles play, the CMS duo of Allen and Caroline Cox was eliminated by Wesleyan's Chong and Victoria Yu, 6-1, 6-1, while the Athenas pair of Brown and Tan defeated Middlebury's duo of Hughes and Skylar Schossberger, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). They will take on Amherst's tandem of Anya Ivenitsky and Avery Wagman.
Redlands' pair of Sarah Ikioka and Elizabeth Johnson was edged by MIT's Kohrs and Rickeman, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 and is elimiated from from doubles play.
