The fields for the 2018 men's and women's basketball NCAA Division III Championship tournaments were announced on Monday.
The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) men's basketball team punched its ticket to the NCAA Tournament following an 86-62 victory over rival Pomona-Pitzer in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament final and enter national playoff action with a 19-7 overall record. The Stags earned their sixth conference tournament title and are making their second straight appearance in the NCAA postseason. CMS took down Whitworth in the NCAA First Round (78-73) before falling to Whitman (79-73) in the second round. The Stags, who registered an impressive 15-1 record against the SCIAC during the 2017-18 season, knocked off Chapman, 83-72 in the league tournament semifinals.
CMS will travel to first and second round host Whitman and will take on Whitworth (24-3) in the NCAA First Round on Friday, March 2. The other first round contest features Whitman (26-1) against Schreiner (15-13). The winners will then meet in the second round on Saturday, March 3. Last year, the Stags met Whitworth in the first round and defeated the Pirates, 78-73, before falling to Whitman in the second round, 79-73.
The Chapman women's basketball team clinched the SCIAC automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Championship after earning a thrilling, 70-61 double overtime win over CMS in the SCIAC Tournament final. The Panthers, who entered league tourney play as the second seed, claimed the program's first SCIAC Tournament championship since joining the conference in 2011. Chapman is making its 17th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and will take the court with a 23-4 overall record. The Panthers bested Cal Lutheran, 75-52 in the semifinals to earn their spot in the SCIAC Tournament final.
Chapman (23-4) will travel to pod host St. Thomas (Minn.) to take on the Tommies (25-2) in opening round action on Friday, March 2. The other first round matchup features Chicago (23-2) and Wisconsin Lutheran (24-3). The winners of the first round tilts will square off in the second round on Saturday, March 3.
