The fields for the 2017 men's and women's soccer as well as the women's volleyball NCAA Division III Championship tournaments were announced Monday.
The Cal Lutheran men's soccer team secured its spot in the 2017 NCAA postseason with a thrilling, 2-1 (2OT) victory over Redlands in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Tournament championship match. The Kingsmen, who won their first SCIAC Tournament title in 2013, advanced to the tournament final following a 3-1 victory over Chapman in the semifinals.
Cal Lutheran stands at 13-4-2 overall and will travel to St. Paul, Minn. to square off against Loras (13-5-1) in NCAA First Round action on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11:30 a.m. at South Field. Pod host St. Thomas (19-1-0) will host Wisconsin-Superior (14-6-2) in the other first round tilt. Saturday's winners will then meet at 11 a.m. in the NCAA Second Round.
The SCIAC will have two representatives in the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship as Whittier punched its ticket to the NCAA postseason following a terrific run through the SCIAC Tournament. The Poets defeated Cal Lutheran, 3-2 (OT) in the tournament semifinals before advancing to the national playoffs for the first time since 2003 following a 1-0 win over Pomona-Pitzer.
Whittier enters the NCAA Championship 12-8-0 on the season and will travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif. to take on Pacific Lutheran (16-3-1) at William Rolland Stadium at 8 p.m.
The Regals (15-3-2), who garnered an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, will host UC Santa Cruz (5-14-1) in Saturday's other NCAA First Round matchup. Cal Lutheran secured the top seed in the SCIAC Tournament after posting a 11-1-2 ledger in league action during the 2017 regular season.
Two teams will also represent the SCIAC in the NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship as conference tournament champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) clinched the automatic qualifier and will be making its fifth straight appearance in the national tournament. The Athenas earned a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-11) sweep of Chapman in the SCIAC Tournament semifinals before posting a 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-16) sweep of Cal Lutheran in the SCIAC Tournament final.
CMS (25-5) travels to Georgetown, Texas and will take on Texas-Dallas (24-10) in the NCAA First Round on Friday Nov. 10 at 3:30 p.m. at the Robertson Center on the campus of regional site host Southwestern (Texas).
Whittier (18-9) earned an at-large nod to the NCAA Tournament and will square off against the host Pirates at 6 p.m. on Friday. The Poets, who are making their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Championship, notched a 10-6 SCIAC record during the 2017 regular season campaign but did not clinch a spot in the SCIAC Tournament.
Whittier joins Colorado College (31-1), New Rochelle (18-10), Pacific Lutheran (20-4), and Trinity (Texas) (27-7) as the other members of the NCAA regional.
