Mike Morgan Named Head Women’s Tennis Coach For Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Mike Morgan has been hired as the new head coach for the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team as recently announced by the Sagehen Athletic Department.

Morgan spent the last 11 years building a dynasty as the head of the Middlebury women's tennis program and coming off of a 2017 season where his squad won a NESCAC Regular Season Championship and finished the year in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament with a No. 4 ITA National Ranking.

"Mike stood out after a highly competitive national search," said Director of Athletics Lesley Irvine. "Through the process it was quickly apparent that Mike Morgan is a special coach and a brilliant tennis mind on the national level. I know he will do a tremendous job in building on the outstanding program that is Sagehen Women's Tennis."

Morgan posted a 159-73 record for the Panthers for the past 11 years at Middlebury, including NCAA quarterfinals appearances in 2007, 2013, and 2015 while his last two seasons ended in the NCAA semifinals for just the program's second and third appearances ever. Morgan also produced a NCAA Singles National Champion in 2013 and earned ITA National Coach of the Year honors in 2013, ITA Regional Coach of the Year honors in 2016 and is a three-time NESCAC Coach of the Year (2008, 2016, 2017). Morgan has consistently kept his teams at the top of the ITA National Rankings as the Panthers have finished ranked in the top-five of Division III in five of the last six seasons.

Before arriving at Middlebury, Morgan spent three years as the head coach for both the men's and women's programs at Colby College. Morgan took the men's program from second to last in the NESCAC to No. 30 overall in the ITA National Rankings and earned their first ever regional ranking as well as their first ranked doubles team in program history.

Morgan returns to the Claremont area after he previously began his Division III coaching career across the street at fellow Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) program Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Morgan spent three seasons at the helm of the CMS men's program where he captured one SCIAC Championship in 2003 and coached a doubles team to a National Championship in 2002. While at CMS, Morgan led his teams to an NCAA appearance all three seasons.

"I am completely honored and humbled to take over for Coach Lebedeff and all that she and Pomona-Pitzer Tennis have accomplished," said Morgan.  "Pomona and Pitzer colleges are obviously incredible schools and provide such a unique and positive atmosphere.  It is also very clear to me that this group of outstanding young women have the desire to keep building on the fantastic success that Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis has achieved on and off the court. I would like to thank Lesley Irvine and all of the administration at Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for this opportunity. I am extremely excited to get to work with the Sagehens."

Morgan is a 1996 graduate of St. Mary's College in Moraga, California, where he was a scholarship tennis player for the Gaels and graduated with a B.A. in Integral Studies and Classics.
