La Verne Men, CMS Women Maintain Lead in SCIAC Golf Championships

CHINO HILLS, Calif. – On day one of the 2017 SCIAC Women’s Golf Championships at the North Course at Los Serranos Golf Club on Sunday, CMS extended its lead with a team score of 306 (+18) on the Par 72 course. Redlands was second on the day with a 323 (+35) followed by Whittier and Pomona-Pitzer at 327 (+39). Cal Lutheran finished in fifth with a 329 (+41) on the day. Chapman is in sixth with a 350 (+62). 

Taylor Hughes from CMS is the individual leader after day one shooting a 73 (+1). She went +2 on the front nine and then birdied holes 10 and 15 to finish -1 on the back nine. She is followed closely by Caroline Ordian from Redlands who is one stroke back with a 74 (+2). Emma Kang, also from CMS, shot a +3, 75 for sole possession of third.

The SCIAC Champion is the determined based on the lowest team total over seven rounds. CMS maintained its lead currently at 1577. Redlands is close behind at 1605 with Pomona-Pitzer in third at 1637. Cal Lutheran is fourth (1665), Whittier fifth (1667) and Chapman sixth (1811).

On the men's side La Verne maintained its lead after shooting a 295 on the first day of the SCIAC Championships for a 1479 total after five rounds.  Redlands also shot a 295 on the day for a 1499 total good enough for third.  Cal Lutheran shot a 297 (+9) for a 1521 total.  CMS fired a 299 (+11) on the day which kept them in second place over all at 1491. Pomona-Pitzer and Chapman each shot a 313 and only a stroke separates them in the overall standings as the Sagehens are at 1523 and the Panthers at 1524. Whittier shot a 317 and is in eighth at 1556.

There is a tie at the top of the individual leaderboard as Alec Spencer from La Verne and Nate Gray of Cal Lutheran each shot -2, 70’s. Shooting even par, Ricardo Torres from Cal Lutheran is solely in third.
