Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (CMS) received all nine first place votes and 81 points to finish first in the 2018 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Women's Track & Field Preseason Poll in a vote conducted by the league's member head coaches.
CMS was the unanimous favorite to finish atop the SCIAC standings in 2018 after receiving all nine first place votes in the preseason poll. The Athenas claimed eight multi-dual points and 24 points in the SCIAC Championships a year ago to win the conference title with a combined 32 points.
In a tight race for second and third at last year's SCIAC Championships, Redlands edged Occidental, 21-18 and held a 28-24 overall points advantage over the Tigers. The Bulldogs were narrowly voted ahead of Occidental, 68-65 in the 2018 preseason poll voting.
Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne each tallied 47 points in the preseason voting ahead of the 2018 campaign to finish fourth and fifth respectively. The Sagehens and Leopards finished in that order in 2017 after Pomona-Pitzer notched five points in the multi-duals, and 15 points at the league championships (20 points); while La Verne claimed three points in the multi-duals and 12 points at the championships to finish with 15 points.
Cal Lutheran (39 points), Whittier (29 points), Chapman (17 points), and Caltech (12 points) round out the 2018 preseason poll after finishing in that order last season. The Regals claimed 13 points highlighted by nine points at the SCIAC Championships, while the Poets received six of their eight points at the championships.
Looking to build on its 20 student-athletes at the NCAA Division III Championships, SCIAC competition in the 2018 outdoor season is set to begin on February 2.
